First I got to say I was really impressed with the hawks. I loved the way hayden played he kept that snarl and even upped it up a notch. Definitely making a case for the 4th line over Bouma who had a couple decent rub out hits but otherwise wasn't noticeable. The camp invites miller, Mitchell and stuart did nothing and don't deserve a roster spot judging by this game.
Vinny, Rutta and Franson stood out and played really well. Knott as well was a big body and had a couple hits even though he wasn't credited. Jurco wasn't bad but I still think he's on the bubble I would have vinny, hayden and tootoo over him. He would be a call up if one of the skills guy got hurt. Will see what happens. |

Two quick things...I thought Forsberg was methodical and economic in his movement and motion, and sometimes it is easy to mis represent that as "slow" side to side up and down. He played very well.
I thought the Blue jackets Korpy didn't play well, as he was seeing the ice after a long absence, and part of the hawk success was diretly attributed to his play |

Funny how most posters on here were claiming the Hawks would get demolished last night...so many glass-half-empty people
I thought Forsberg looked fantastic. - Hank3Henshaw
I think there was a little joking around with that. |

Totally agree on Kampf. He made 2 slick dzone passes that were mostly unnoticeable if you weren't looking closely. He seems to have that gift of hockey intelligence that can't be taught.
For a team of youngsters, they all played pretty well. Hayden and Schmaltz stood out the most as mentioned by many and Jurco made strides to being a possibility.
The young Dmen will continue to develop and hopefully be a strength come playoff time. - Hawkytalk
Good point HT...remember when he skated it from the D-zone instead of making a dumb pass. He read the ice and skated to open area and smoothly got the puck out the zone. I thought he was very solid, dependable, big, fast and very respectable on faceoffs. Sounds like a L4-C to me. Dauphin I think would do fine at wing on the fourth line, especially if he stinks at faceoffs, and all indications are he does. |

Fun little exhibition last night. A lot of those kids look stronger than I expected. I'll ignore the score because it's pre-season, but a lot of skills to like.
The good:
Schmaltz and Hino were better than all other players, but that's no surprise. Schmaltz is bigger and faster. He's a mainstay. Hino could push to make it again.
Dauphin and Kampf were both solid. Kampf is a rock in his own end and could take over Kruger's role if he keeps playing like that. Dauphin showed his motor and tenacity on the puck. He can give other guys fits.
Franson, Ruuta, and Kempny could be the 4-5-6 on D. Ruuta in particular looked mistake free.
Jurco looked capable and more defensively responsible. Highmore was around the net a lot. Knott was good in the dot and got to the net, but needs Rockford time for sure.
Hayden looked like a power forward. Good disruption with his size and kept the puck well using his body a la Hossa.
Jokiharju could be an excellent defenseman in the future. Great poise and movement for a teenager.
Forsberg clearly won the battle of CBJ backup goalies. Made some real athletic saves.
The bad:
Mitchell, Bouma, and Miller were virtually unnoticeable. Not a good look if you're battling for a spot. Stuart should probably not be playing hockey. Baun was a non-factor, so was pretty much everyone else. |

So new season, new team, and still one same problem?
I really wish we had that really good offensive dman on the second pair. And or that flashy talent guy on a second line. Who knows if Duchene is coming aboard! Great if we had a big beast of a forward whom could hold the puck or tie up two defenders.
I say these things with the idea that when a top line isn't good enough to win the game, then you have other options which can result in a win. The result perhaps since we controlled the puck more, had some good looks beyond Kane's line.
The fact will be until an entire season is played, you don't know what you have with Toews.
He said that he had played often the last two years with nagging injuries. Oh my gosh he gets mauled all too often and I don't notice us returning that assault on one of their players. Certainly not tit for tat.
Now this year I like how some of these concerns (of mine, anyway) should be addressed.
The Toews line contrasts the pure skill sort of line where Kane is the anchor. Good move to establish a solid second line with a different style, Stan. But of course it rests more than anything else on what degree can Toews remain healthy.
Our second and third defense pairing actually have more to offer in offensive skill. And Samuelson teaching with corresponding effect is not going to leave the opponent skating way feeling they were in some nice, protected safe place like church.
There is more real talent, more real depth to get excited about than ever. There is more prospects to get excited about, too. Although I can imagine Steve Rain is merely yawning over the ADB fan brigrade. To this last mention, yep, Steve, no sense to jump up and cheer until ADB actually brings it.
How nice, though, to see if a wonder kid comes riding in on a white horse signaling victory without Kane....OMG dreadful if Kane was felled.
Anyway, isn't it amazing how Chicago was rated as tied at 12:1 Stanley Cup Odds. Mighty nice to believe that, to retain such faith, however....which is sort of a complement, eh? Yet from the get go, this inexperienced blue line crew could very well step up. How good will Forsling, Kempny, and Ruuta come playoffs.
I can't say with any degree of certainty. But I am sure there is a glimmer in the eye, a quiet, controlled, excitement in the mind of Samuelson and Bowman. As for Q, you know he likes veterans but perhaps if the kids keep improving (read: less mistakes) and he plays Franson less....
So you can see this could be a topsy turvy season. Just how will everything turn out. I will go as far as to say we can make the playoffs. Will be a tough grind. But about the 12:1 odds to play for The Holy Grail.....right now this is dreaming. |

Hinno on 2nd line Center? Do people really want this? I would immediately put Anisimov there ahead of him...
I would also gladly part with a few players on your opening night roster to bring in Matt Duchene- who would look a lot better in that line up than a few others.
If ADB is up, I would have to believe it is to play- not sit and watch from above. If that's the case he is far better suited in Rockford (where I believe he should be to start the season anyways).

Highly doubt Q leaves the 2nd line like that.
If Schmaltz is at center, you best bet Hayden, Saad or someone else with size/snarl will line up on the left...
Even Sharp wouldn't be a bad idea, finishing Kanes passes
And lets face it, the Q-blendo-matic will be in full force by Thanksgiving, so everyone will play with everyone |

His lineup was structured:
C - LW - RW
Look at the Toews/Anisimov lines, doubt both of those two are lining up left of the dot |

Is it going to be Schmaltz at 2C and Anisimov at 3C?
Regarding DCat, is it possible he starts the season in Rockford, or has he proven to the coaches that he belongs here from Day 1? Wouldn't surprise me if they keep him or another kid in Rockford to keep Tootoo around, because we've all seen this movie too many times already.

It would appear that Schmaltz is going to start the season at 2C, whether or not he can stay there is another story (but I think he will).
Debrincat won't be an extra for Chicago, he'll play every night either in Chicago or Rockford. A few young kids have stood out in a positive way, namely Debrincat, Hayden, Dauphin ("Flipper") and Kampf. The kids are making Q's decisions really difficult, which is good. |

Numbers are pulled from Hockey Reference so who knows? You maybe confusing him with the Madison Flash, Jack Skille.
I liked Brookbank also. Played wherever was needed, defense, forward and didn't hurt a team too badly.
Joe Murphy was close to his expiration date when he was here and J.P Dumont really didn't show much until he was traded to Buffalo where he did well.

Compared to last year when you saw virtually nothing from the prospects though Fortin wasn't bad, yesterday you saw great things from
Kempny, Ruuta, Vinnie, Kampf, Hayden, Jurco and we STILL haven't even seen ADB, Fortin, Pokka, etc. take the ice.
The bar has been set very high.
One guy who I thought was a mixed bag last night was gus. If camp broke today I'd probably send him out. He's close, but still not in love with his D-Z play. Rutta and Kemp are much stronger in their own end. Likely a product of age, size and maturity. Gus will get there. |
|
|
|
They should probably give Fransen monies to play for them even if he is kind of slow. NHL player, has a bomb of a shot and they still have a lot of unknowns on the blueline. Pretty obvious what you will get with that player and I think he could help some of the younger guys.
Otherwise, it was a preseason game and the first month of the season is still going to be a challenge. But it was good to see some positives and hopefully they can build on that moving forward. |

Maybe he pulls some draws and plays on the second line but with how dynamic Patrick Kane is, if all three of those guys have their feet moving and are interchanging positions it could be a fun group to watch and it doesn't really matter who the C is. |

If not winning a battle for a puck counts you are right. He went in soft more than 1 time, avoiding contact and failed to turn the puck. In the offensive zone he is more than fine...if he was anything near good in the Defensive zone he'd be locked and loaded as a top 4 D-man today. Alas, he's not...wonder why? Because he's not ready yet, especially in the D-zone. I think he'll stick as a bottom pair D-man taking more O-zone starts and maybe running some power play. |

It was just one game against competition that was not much better than the Prospect Tourney in Traverse City. I want to see more of each player before judging.
In some instances certain players could have been less "noticeable" last night because of who their linemates were. If they were put on a line with higher skilled players or faster players they may have been more noticeable.
This will really get interesting once the roster is trimmed down to about 30 players.
Rockford with Colliton, Brookbank and the talent they are getting should be fun to watch.
