I used NHL.tv for a season but it blacked out the Sabres game for me (I think it was based on my IP location). When the games weren't blacked out it was pretty damn good quality. I got rid of it and went the *ahem* slightly-less-than-legal streams. If you look on reddit you can find those that are super legit with few (if any) ad overlays. Just make sure you have a good anti-virus and pop-up blocker
EDIT: Most of the time myself or another one of these yahoos will post a link to a really good stream - feetontheair22
It is based on your IP, I use it to as I don't have cable. Up until someone mentioned VPN and the look on my face was equivalent to when Clark Griswold when he realized he didn't have a saw.......I then dug it up by the roots and dropped it on top of the car.
In other words, I got a VPN. I'll let you know how it works this year if you'd like. Based on your past posts I think you're about a half hour from me, so if it works for me it should work for you.

I pay for the nhl.tv subscription and spend an extra $30 a year for a really good vpn. The problem with using a VPN is that sometimes you will not get great internet speeds coming out of whatever server you're using to change your location.
The way around this is to turn off the VPN once the stream starts. The NHL.tv website will only check your IP address when you load a page. (you also can't vpn before you log in if you are trying to hide your IP in Canada since you will be redirected to the Rogers network login which is different than the normal NHL.tv login)
I guess long story short:
The NHL.tv streams are great quality (and you can choose which play by play to listen to)
For an extra $30 a year you can watch any game you want no matter if its nationally televised or not
Turning off the VPN once the stream loads ensures no stream lagging or other issues assuming your home internet is ok.

You mean that bet last year where you said we would not finish in the bottom five?
Oh damn - GERBE!!!75PTS
Yeah that one, when you tried to change the bet .... and the other half dozen you don't do what you say you will do.... or the trade you agree to and then back out of....
Do you know how much NHL.tv subscription costs? - Der Kaiser
$140 for all the teams for the year
$25 for all the teams for a month
$111 for one teams games for the year
Which sounds pricey, but if you consider $170 (for all games plus VPN) and you watch every sabres game its ~$2 a game. which is a pretty good deal for full hd.
Also I don't have cable so it is another net benefit for me. I could just get a cable subscription and watch them all on MSG but hockey is the only reason I would use it.
