Yeah, that's true, but the airport isn't really built to handle it. The runways are too short, and the terminal is tiny.

Detroit is a good example of an airport that can serve as a mini hub, it's got 6 runways, including 1 that is 30% longer than Buffalo's "long" runway. And all the rest are at least as long with 3 being longer than our "long" one.

Both the airport and the runway were supposedly designed for the ability to expand without much hassle. Currently, the airport has multiple unoccupied gates and is well under capacity. The only thing that is hindering this is a lack of demand. Frontier's presence will help this though. They're coming in with a pretty robust schedule. It will be interesting to see the capacity of the flights to Denver and Miami. Southwest Airlines did a trial run to Denver out of Buffalo for about 2 months, and it supposedly was full more often than not.

It might be simple, but there will be hassle, people are already pissed about the noise. You think adding 3000'+ to the main runway for the ability to accommodate wide bodies for long non-stop flights is going to happen without much hassle?

People complain about the noise near any airport, and the value of homes are adjusted. Despite any PR pandering, if some airline gives the NFTA enough of an incentive to expand, resident complaints will be low on its list when weighing the pros and cons. The said, the only way that happens is an overseas flight, and that's not coming any time soon.
