Opinions vary, to be sure.
Of All Time Sabres, Gare makes that team, with a top 10 pick, likely a little higher than 10...and we are talking about Sabres jersey retires, not the fabled Habs.
The intangibles he brought separate him out from others...and scoring 50 on a checking line is an accomplishment.
He was a fan, coach, and owner favorite.
Analytics falls short in that evaluation of why. - IonSabres

Josh Anderson, who remains unsigned eight days before the Columbus Blue Jackets begin their regular season, has requested a trade from the NHL club.
Anderson, an improving player who took a big step last season, was expected to be an important piece in the team’s plans for 2017-18. The Blue Jackets worked hard to avoid exposing him in the NHL Expansion Draft and it’s believed they rejected Colorado’s requests to include him in any Matt Duchene trade.
But negotiations have been difficult. Anderson is a restricted free agent. On Tuesday, The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline reported the team and player were “as little as $150,000 per year (apart) on a three-year contract — but both sides are standing firm on principle.”

Why does it need to be measured?
Guys that don't necessarily end up on the score sheet regularly are just as important to a team. Not everything that means something has to have a number of some sort assigned to it. - HonkFortheGoose
To gauge whether it's actually important or not.
It goes back to players like say Josh Gorges.
If his "intangilbes" like leadership, grit etc help the team, that should show up in the standings, no? |

Bogosian with 8 shots. There's the housley effect, but they didnt win which is the lack of depth effect. Still very encouraging to see. Hope it stays this way. - Sabresfan-365
He was also well out of place on the Kessel goal.
It's going to be better for him offensively, and worse for him defensively |

Intangibles are great if the player is good. I'm sure Rob Niedermayer had wonderful intangibles, but he sucked.
Josh Gorges seems like a grumpy guy who "holds players accountable." He also happens to suck
Mike Grier had intangibles and was actually good in the playoffs |

He has his name on the Cup. And he was really good for them in the finals. So I'm not sure he's the best example. |

Yep, and that's the point i'm getting at.

and 9 times out of 10, he won't be out there against Phil Kessel.
He was in over his head last night. We lost by 1 goal. They were 2/3 on the PP. It's not like we got spanked 5v5, which is (according to you) what matters.

Why can't players have good intangibles but be one of the less talented guys? The talented guys aren't required to have both. But a guy that doesn't have a ton of talent can't be important because of his intangibles?
I get that a guy with intangibles has to be able to hold his own, but there's something to be said for guys that go out, put their nose to the floor and do what's asked AND bring those intangibles to the rink. Just because they aren't the most gifted player doesn't mean they don't have something to add or contribute.
You're seriously making it sound like unless every guy on a team is like Toews he doesn't have a place in the NHL.

mhm, but hopefully thats enough to dump the whole salary and create room for a modern day defensive d-man. |

Drury, Grier and kaleta come to mind. In Drury's last year with the rangers he scored the goal to get them in the playoffs. The wheels had already started coming off for him but his drive was still there. I just have no room on a roster for a Matt Ellis type "who gives it his all and provides the intangibles." That's hocus pocus hockey speak

Modern day nhl leans toward that though. these days its simply not enough to have the intangibles, those guys are getting phased out. new nhl you have to at least bring some sort of speed or other offensive/defensive skill set to the table to consistently be a part of a good nhl team.
The era of guys like gorges is basically dead. |

That's a garbage move imo. He never got a chance to play in the top 9. Shocker, he doesn't make a difference playing on the 4th line |

This is why the eye test must coexist with stats / analytics.
The stats don't tell the reason for why heart and soul player Danny Gare was revered by fans and players alike at the time he played.
I'd take Danny on my team any day. - IonSabres
He was a very good player don't get me wrong but not good enough to have his number retired IMO. Numbers retired are for those special players that come around every so often. |
