TLDR version:
- Probably have 1 too many soft/skilled vets that need easy mins + PP time
- Would probably be better if they had a Hansen type instead of Vanek to create a checking or "shutdown" line to handle tough mins + PK and free up PP spot + easier mins for youth
- Tough for management to balance out the need for offensive + defensive veteran support for the youth
- Current situation is still better than the year when Virtanen/McCann both made the team |

He was always slow.
Why would putting a fast player with the Sedins help them? They'd be crossing centre when said player is crossing the blue line. - Scooby_Doo
No he was a good skater in his prime, he was their puck retrieval guy. Not graceful but still quick.
Who said having a fast player would help the Sedins lol, just joking that Vantel could be faster than them? |

The one thing I agree with you here on is that the vets on the team are all soft/skilled guys who need easy minutes at 5v5 + PP time to be effective. As much as Hansen/Burrows/Higgins etc got stale to watch offensively, they didn't need PP time or to play in an offensive role to be useful for the coach. They were all bottom 6 guys who PK'd and could actually back check.
Eriksson and even my boy Sutter play a solid 2 way game and can PK, but Henrik, Daniel, Vanek and Gagner all need easy 5v5 mins + PP time to be useful.
It's a tough spot, because you have to balance out having enough offensive opportunities available for the young guys if they do earn a spot in the pre-season and continue to thrive during the regular season. But ar the same time, you do want some vets who can actually play in the offensive zone as well to help out the young guys and take some pressure off of them to score.
I'd say if you had one less soft/skilled vet and replaced him with a vet who can handle tough minutes, the balance would be better. Like a Hansen type over Vanek. That way you have PP time freed up for another young guy + you can create a vet checking line to play against top lines with Eriksson - Sutter - (2-way vet).
But the current situation is still better than having the crap depth they had the year McCann/Virtanen both made the team. - Nucker101
I know it can't be all rookies I still like Sutter and I like Gagner. I can even live with Eriksson . You also have Granlund and Sven and this is where I would prefer a younger faster player like Kane or Turris on a four year deal. Someone in the 27-28 range . Not someone pushing 40

name one player outside Bo/Boeser that fans come to the rink to see specifically on the Canucks... - Codes1087
That's my point. He should be all for a tank so he can market the poop out of a "franchise saviour"

The Calgary Flames will start with two new goalies for the second consecutive season. Mike Smith was acquired in a trade with the Arizona Coyotes on June 17, and the Flames traded for Eddie Lack from the Carolina Hurricanes on June 29.
The results have not been encouraging. Lack had an .860 save percentage, allowing eight goals on 57 shots. Rookie Jon Gillies had an .844 save percentage (five goals on 32 shots), and Smith had an .800 save percentage (six goals on 30 shots). Calgary ranked last with an .837 save percentage before games played Wednesday.
Wasn't Red in here spouting that Smith would be top 5 in wins this season? |

Boeser isn't going anywhere, I don't care about Virtanen. I want a stacked Comets team - CanuckDon
why? Who gives a poop about the Comets, it's a development league. They developed Virtanen on a poop team last year. |

McCann & 2nd > Gudbranson.....(frank) Benning's stupid - LeftCoaster
Was never a fan of the trade but hoping we see an improved Gudbranson this year now that he's healthy. Then ideally you trade 1 of him or Edler at the TDL for a decent return. If he wants to test the UFA market then you trade EG by default before losing him for nothing. |

UFA D market next year isn't nothing special. A bunch of 30 plus over the hill guys. John Carlson and Sbisa. If they are trading away Edler and Gudbranson, get some more developed prospects in return. |
