Analytics are not and should not be the only measurement tool a team/fan uses to access the importance/production of a player, but having said that, to not use Analytics when there is so much data out there today, would be dumb.

Agreed.

Contrary to common misconception, +/- is just another analytic like Corsi, G/A/P, etc.

In some sense Corsi has been developed as a proxy for +/- that is often-times more robust to uncertainty (depending on what exactly you are trying to estimate and over what range of time). It is laughable how mathematically illiterate people deride +/- while expressing an almost religious praise for Corsi.

+/- is really one of the worst analytical stats out there. To me, individual analytical stats weigh far more than line mate influenced.

+/- is pretty much the horoscope of hockey. It's about that accurate from a statistical standpoint.
- neem55

Most ppl have no clue how +/- works.
Its not a stand alone number without giving it context either.

young power forward, who had a breakout year, and has handcuffed his GM a little bit, why not inquire?

Was he tabbed a bust at 21yrs old?

Would trading baertschi or grandlund plus a pick be enough? Or maybe trade Gudbransson or Hutton. Too much?
- canucks1986

So you wanna trade either Sven or Gran for a guy who had less goals/points last season + offer a pick?

Nobody wants Guddy or Hutton

what team is going to pay a premium for a UFA d-man who had a really poor season last season (statistically and injury wise).

I'll answer after my Q has been lol

I was reading Friedman's 31 Thoughts column and after reading the note on the new coach's challenge penalty I am going to predict the following happens:

Vancouver is up a goal late in the 3rd, opponent scores. VAN challenges and the goal stands, the opponent then scores on the ensuing powerplay, losing them the game

you are asking what is "not much" in a market for D men?

I wouldn't know, the season hasn't started yet. I would say at this point, almost nothing. I think as the seasons starts, players start to get hurt, teams start separating themselves as playoff teams or non-playoff teams, UFA players stock (and D men especially) will start to rise.

Coaches challenge on offside always was silly imo
Leave it as a judgement call & remove one more delay in the game.

Hey were you always a Ref? If not congrats on the gig. Remember that Spiderman quote

Corsi will likely be a flash in the pan as more advanced analytics come online. Like image processing techniques for automatically reviewing footage (initially offline but eventually online too). I suspect a lot of advanced analytics companies are already developing these tools and with them will come a lot of extra fancy named stats.

I think the next logical step for hockey analytics is for coaches and other experts of the 'eye' test to start incorporating their evaluation heuristics into automated video analysis to create new metrics.

who needs an eye test when we have coaches challenge, and every coach and staff member equipped with an IPAD or a tablet behind the bench reviewing the last play. It's absolutely crazy the technology they have behind the bench these days.

So imagine all of the notes/tallies/evaluations they create if they were to review every piece of footage of a game in immense detail. And then imagine a computer program automating that process in real-time to provide those evaluations. Future coaches can just be figure-heads (i.e., motivational speakers and former professionals that the players respect).

There will always be a need for coaches, but as we increase the real time technological devices that coaching staff have access to, it really does take so much away from the game..

I am terribly irresponsible if thats what youre getting at

Havent they started to put chips in the uniforms as well? The collection of data is a big part of the new statistics, it'll be very interesting to see people make sense of the chaos

You think he comes close to repeating those numbers? I don't.

Would love him as a bottom 6 winger, but I'm not buying high.
