you totally glanced over rask's .750 shoot out save %
if lehner could make a few saves before Feb, sabres could have been in the playoff hunt
lehner was not better than rask

Lehner sucked in the S/O no doubt, but also got some rotten luck.
He was not better, period. He was better in one facet of the game, and our shooters struggled too.
Would you take a goalie with a lower sv% and a higher s/O save percent? |

if the sabres had to win game 82 to make the playoffs, and you could start rask or lehner, who would you start
if you are thinking for more than 1 second, the answer is rask |

Mashed Potatoes!
Watch the (frank)ing games and not the stat line.
(this was not directed at you...just the analytics community in general) - feetontheair22
Here's a really crazy idea. instead of using numbers to make decisions, we can use these numbers to make more informed decisions. Watch the games, check the stats. Don't match up? look further into it. I mean stat lines are literally the stats that were produced from the game. Choosing to make decisions entirely based on them is foolish. ignoring them altogether is just as foolish. |

Ehhh...
I think you're putting too much on Lehner in terms of the shootout thing. It was 4 shootouts. He allowed 8 goals on 8 shots (yes, I know it's terrible). The other telling side of that is that our shooters scored 0 goals on 8 shots in those as well.
In any event, that's 4 extra points in the standings. Which really does 0 for us. We would have been at 82 points, which was still 13 out of the playoffs. So yeah, not even close....
Does he need to be better in shootouts? Absolutely. But the blame cannot be 100% on him nor did those games impact our playoff chances. |

I like Tuuka Rask a lot, but take the names away, and just show the stats and a lot of people would pick Lehner's stats.
Rask has a track record and a cup, so he gets away with some pedestrian numbers |

Lehner had one of the worst high danger save percentages. If you buy into ristolainens problems being bylsma you cant take lehner off the hook. Ristolainen collapsed and guarded the slot like it was his last stand. |

Sry my fat fingers flagged you by accident. I really haven't studied the advanced numbers so I can't speak to that. I just think the name Rask has a lot more cache than Lehner, and traditional save percentage is part of that |

A lot of that was when Chara was really good. I don't get why you're cherry picking stats to make Lehner look bad while not giving him credit for the easiest stat to check |

i think it carries more cause hes flat out been better. even using just the eyes. how many eye rolls per game have we had with lehner. He'll make a bunch of saves in a row and you'll think wow hes dialed and then next shift insert fourth liner here scores a howler. How many games has he really stolen. That one overtime in montreal? And his shootout numbers dont get a pass, not when its that bad.
Bylsma coached the D to do everything in there power to sacrifice possession in order to limit the dangerous shots that Lehner would see. Housley is going to do the opposite. |

I agree he's better from a career standpoint. But I think he's on the downswing of things a bit, and Lehner should be more on the upswing.
My point is that he has proven more, which is why Boston gets the benefit of the doubt more often than not. And in many ways, deservedly so. |

C'mon man, an award from 3 years ago isn't relevant to this. The gap isn't as wide as you think. There may not even be a gap at all.
I stand by my earlier comment. Show 100 hockey people their stats from last year without names and lot would pick Lehner |
