I love 97, but The Russian Rocket destroyed everyone. With that said, 97 is like a hot knife and everyone is butter. I bought the hockey package to watch my Devils and 97 and it already paid off one game in! |

As a Canucks fan, Mcdavid is going to torch us for a really really long time. And its going to suck.
As a hockey fan, Im happy he's in our division. Being able to watch him more often than other fanbases is somewhat lucky for me in a sense I guess.
Guy is so fun to watch play. Its must see TV.
Good luck this year Oil Fans. |

So much of building a team is correctly identifying who is a core player, who is complimentary and who is expendable. The absolute core should be McDavid, Draisaitl, Klefbom and Talbot and the complimentary players are Larsson, one of Sekera or Nuge (due to cap hits) and perhaps guys like Strome, Benning, Slepyshev and Nurse- depending on their development and new contracts. - MaximumBone
Really?
Honestly, I value Larsson as a vital part of the core.
You're looking (hopefully expecting, in Pulj's case) at McDavid, LD, Klefbom, Talbot, Larsson, and Pulj as the core for years to come. I see that as something to build upon.
RNH, Strome, Maroon, Kassian, Slepy, Sekera, and a few others are/should be seen as complimentary pieces.
In the meantime, I'm slowly starting to think that Nurse should be packaged in order to acquire a Top 6 RW while Pulj develops. Much of that depends upon Jones' development, RNH's development, and Strome's ability to hold down his own line. Whether or not splitting up LD also comes to mind as well. |

It's not an insult to him; it's just clear that he doesn't control the play the way a guy like Klefboner does. Core to me is those few key guys who are practically irreplaceable to the team and, despite being an excellent Dman, Larsson isn't that (barring an unforeseen step in development).
Notice how I have Sekera and Nuge outside that core as well? Still very valuable players with a lot to give but they're not a 1C, 1D or proven starting goalie.
As for Puljujarvi, he's not even in the conversation for "core" until he's consistently in the NHL. He's entirely replaceable and I'd move him for the right quality, proven asset in a heartbeat. Similar goes for Yammers- though I wouldn't move both. |

Interesting. I see the core as more generic than you do. I see it as 1C, elite winger/center, top pairing, and goalie (around these categories; you can have more than one of each in some cases; usually only if you're lucky and your GM is a savant in cap management).
You need a top flight defense to cut it in today's NHL. To me, without a great top pairing, it only makes the journey tougher. Not trying to ride the Larsson bandwagon, but he is a big part of our defensive systems (even though I still think he has some untapped offensive potential) and if he were to be traded, it would get very ugly on-ice.
Your 1C is that force to be reckoned with, the guy who can carry a line and battle it out day in and day out.
Then you have that dynamic winger (used to be Hall) but now, in our case, LD, dynamic center/RW that can be utilized to spread the scoring or play with the 1C to form a formidable threat.
As for goalie, that's self-explanatory.
As for Pulj, I noted him as a hopeful. He has all of the right ingredients, he just needs to find a way to make it work.
Opinions on Nurse though? |

BLASPHEMY!!!!! You beg Lord Larsson for forgiveness AT ONCE!!!!! - laughs2907
Lets be real for a moment here.
Klefbom > Larsson.
You're talking about comparing a potentially elite defender (if he continues developing just a bit more) to at best, a top 2 defender (note: seen as a top 3 by some people).

I wouldn't exactly say that, IMO. Look at how the Devils turned out in turns of defense. Their goalie had his worst year in quite a while and I'm pretty sure they had the highest goals against. Their entire defensive system was a mess. They traded their best defender and they ended up picking #1. Is all of this a Coincidence? I think not. I would just pick your words a bit more wisely. You never know what you have until its gone. Ask SmellMyfinger how he feels about the previous season. |
