Ok Connor is fast! We all see it and it's obvious.
Now what actually should have been said......
Oilers from drop of opening faceoff took charge and never let foot of gas pedal. 2nd and 3rd yr players showed a hunger a maturity and they reeked of confidence. Not used to seeing that after yrs of no playoffs. But this yr isn't like the others and it shows. The only player that appeared to be unsure and look like a rookie was Yamamoto and rightfully so. Strome had a average first game but already fits in better than eberle did, thank you Pete for that. The boys looked like they played in playoffs yesterday and it was refreshing to see, thanks Todd for that.
Now for an oiler blogger to talk about the obvious but not gather thoughts about an important game, game one or 81 it's still important when playing div rivals, a game with probly one of the best all around games played for 60 min. A game played with probly the best home opener performance of distant memory. A game where team d was near flawless and in playoff form, here we are discussing how fast mcdavid is. Something sportsnet already covered in depth.
Matt your an oiler blogger and this all you have to talk about. Good games you talk Connor. Bad games you talk about all the moves chia should or shouldn't have done. But yet one of the best performances in ten yrs and you have nothing to say but talking about individual speed of one player. It's ignorant or stupidity, take your choice. Do us all a favour and cover a diff team or sport preferably. Take tanner with please. |

Klefbom still doesn't get the credit he deserves. Same goes for Slavin who I also grabbed later in the draft. - MaximumBone

Tavares, Kopitar, Pavelski - FransNielson
Kopitar had a down year. As did Jonny T
Pavelski is great no doubt and totally underrated. But I wouldn’t even really consider him over any of the names I mentioned

***This is also going towards Larsson_Fan and HB.***
Not quite stating IQ here, but rather awareness. You can always learn to play better and know what to do in specific situations, how to handle situations, and what might be the best thing to do in each situation.
IQ, on the other hand, is more so instinctive (like you guys mentioned, HOWEVER, I see awareness as apart from IQ, IMO). I'm thinking more along the borderlines of creativity and setting the bar when it comes to the highest/higher IQ level (Orr, Crosby, Roy, McDavid, Lidstrom).
Think of it like Chess, you can always learn new strategies, new methods of attacking, defending, openings, etc. You can always get better by every game played. However, when it comes to the end of a game, the guys that have the most creativity and the best instinctive tactical approaches always come out on top.
Now as for Nurse, I honestly think it's his risk assessment and situation analysis that needs to be improved. His Hockey IQ is there offensively (we has seen him join rushes, DEVELOP rushes, and chances in the past), however, his defensive IQ is meh IMO (not really creative within his own zone in terms of zone exits). HOWEVER, I think that by developing his awareness to a higher degree (remember those terrible, pointless, terrible gaffs he made last season, cause I can name a few?), hopefully capitalizing and expanding upon Wednesday's performance, he could very well be a solid player. - EdmHockeyMan

Despite his down year, I'd still keep Tavares in there on the low end. I don't think it was so "down" as to justify taking him out of the top-10.
Beyond him, Matthews and Backstrom are tough to keep outta there and Eichel will likely be in there by midseason (assuming health). A healthy Stamkos is hard to count out, too.

And yeah, too tens are tough. Getzlaf gets a ton of love from me as he again proved to me in last years playoffs that he’s as dominant as they come still. Etc etc
What I don’t struggle with is the top 4 tho.
Connor, sid, Malkin, Bergeron are the true creme imo

Bergeron is debatable . I love him but i'm not sure on his best day he is better than Kopitar. Definitely better than Toews tho, that guy's offence is drying up with every passing season. |
