how come there is a selke award for forwards, but not defenseman.
there should be a defensive defenseman award.
i'd call it the lidstrom. - dbot
I'd call it the Norris... then award the orr for the most offensive dman and the lidstrome for the most balanced one...

Statboy will return with all the answers soon enough.
I think you have two age scales; forwards and dmen. I think you can get a lot of miles out of a defensive dman more so you can an offensive dman. I was always under the impression many of the top dmen come into their own in their early 30s. - bloatedmosquito
Statman pop. Stat Man!
It's different for different positions. Goalies and d tend not get high-end until 25 or so. It's a lot more common to see 19-23 year old forwards making a significant impact, but fizzling out a little earlier (I think were going to see this even more if the game stays fast like it is changing to). After 30, only the elite of the elite don't regress and even then at 33-34 they slow down. Crosby is 33 is three years here, I wonder if/when we will start to see some decline in production. Because they are so fit, the average career is a bit longer, but falls off production wise. Were even seeing Duncan Kieth regress a bit and the guy has some of the best windgate(endurance) scores of any athlete in any sport.

True, but to name a trophy after him he should be retired at least.

I said that Tanev is really good at one aspect of his position.
I don't know what's so ludicrous about that.
Sure, it's like an offensive forward if you want.
Those exist too.
I'm not sure what your point is tbh.
If you don't understand the other worldly abilities of DD, well...you're too far gone for me to help you on that one. - dbot

I think, that lidstrom misses the point you're trying to make. How many Norris trophies did the guy win? Incredible talent at both ends.
I would think the award you're talking about for defensive d-man would be "toughest to play against" maybe the players get to vote? Pronger award.

I was following the discussion on this and thought that would be appropriate for expanding D man awards. No clue what the incentive is though.
Sometimes I don't know if the spelling mistakes are accidently on purpose or just part of autocorrect rushing a post out. Either way its a good laugh, not at you, but how its interpreted. Nice banter fellas. |

Oh I agree with you, I just think that it has gone too far and the next time a left handed Vietnamese dentist is in the crowd and someone scores... we need to start to tabulate that. |

I know players play on the edge but when Pronger used his skate to try and take off Kesler's leg that was too much. I laugh when I see him charge of player safety |

The guy's career and play speak for themselves, no one wanted to go down in the corners (except maybe Burtuzzi ) when that guy was on the ice. He was the most feared dman of the 90's, period. Stevens hit hard, sure. He's probably in the conversation, but Pronger was much better at defending than Stevens who wasn't actually that good at covering and the technical side of defending. |
