The guy's career and play speak for themselves, no one wanted to go down in the corners (except maybe Burtuzzi ) when that guy was on the ice. He was the most feared dman of the 90's, period. Stevens hit hard, sure. He's probably in the conversation, but Pronger was much better at defending than Stevens who wasn't actually that good at covering and the technical side of defending. - neem55

Sorry all...but if a defensive defenseman award were to be handed out it would have to be called the Langway Trophy. |

Having Neidemeyer as defensive partner makes anyone look good too. Not to mention the trap
It worked, but man do I ever not miss it. |

Best goal scorer
Best defenseman

I think it should be treated just like Hockeybuzz, give all players a participation ribbon and turn the Stanley Cup into a spittoon. Then Leafs fans can say we won 13 Spittoons. |

That's what I was referring too, defensive only - Makita
This is why he would have amazing value though. After a team gets the first goal, keeping the puck out of the net becomes that much more important. Tanev gives any team in the league the best chance they have to win games, or the cup. As much as defensemen that can score are admired, the majority of offensive defensmen are not the greatest at defending. Tanev is great at getting the puck out of our zone, which helps create offense. Imagine how much better his offense driving numbers would improve on a team that can actually do something with what he does on the ice on the back end.
I love having Tanev on the team as he makes us better, however in 4 years when we are starting to actually be competitive again, he will be 31 and it is hard to say if he will still be effective like Keith still is at an older age, or if he will be useless like Seabrook is in his older age. Some defensemen stay good until they are mid 30's, some declined sharply after 30. We are not in a position to wait and see what happens with him. Getting a ton of assets for him now will give us the best chance to be better in 4 years and beyond that.
That being said, if Tanev is traded, Guddy will be needed more. I say one is traded and one is kept to eat minutes in order to help the young guys develop. I prefer to keep Tanev over Guddy TBH. |

Over the years I never really liked Tanev . I thought he was too soft and brought no offense. It is just in the last few months I see his value to Canucks. When I hear of mentorship and protecting young players he is a perfect candidate. He does make his partner better and would be very useful for developing OJ Pouliot Hutton or if we draft a top 5 pick this year.
Canucks seem to be taking a step forward and I think him there teaching would be a better value than a first round return pick? |
