Welcome to our world.
You had three categories of play for last night - great / good / bad - I would add a “meh” class between your good and bad, because I don’t think this deserves a bad rating, but -
I saw a definite inability (reluctance?) to go the the net to bother Elliott - and to be in the right position when some did go there.
Even with the better zone time - and on the PPs - a lot of skating in wide circles around the net looking for passes instead of getting in front of the goalie and fighting for position to follow the puck and blind him.
There seems to be a lack of understanding of how to get in the dangerous position in front of the goalie so he has to struggle to find the puck. Maybe this is a Q feature - stay off center so you can use the stick more for deflections. It’s not working.

If you have any medication at your disposal and a license to dispense, you'll find that may come in handy as well.
Welcome and look forward to reading your blogs. I agree as far as the forward lines go and thought there was definitely some balance.
Toews and Panik seem to have developed chemistry over the last year and DeBrincat at least deserves a look on the left where he's typically played.
If Toews line can thrive without Saad, I think 20 8 88 could be really good together. |

The "Meh" category makes sense to me for the lack of net presence. It would be placed in the "Bad" section if they lost, but because they won, let's hope it's an area of improvement they focus on.
I agree, it is really frustrating to watch at times. I tweeted an example last night that at the end of the 1st period, in the dying seconds... on the Power Play, no one crashed the net.
Toews was coming off the wall and threw a quick pass to the net. Ideally not the best play but I think he was expecting 1, 2... maybe even 3 guys to be barreling down on Elliott. No one was in sight when the puck arrived.
You're taught throughout hockey and gain these instincts to rush the net on an offensive chance like that as there will be no time for the opposing team to counter.
Maybe they were tired. Who knows? Just wish the Hayden's, Panik's and Saad's would set up shop more regularly in front and cause a disruption.

I don't get it. They have the guys who seem to be willing (or the ability at least) to do just that but like you said it's inconsistent.
For all the ragging on AA, he still knows that's where he needs to be to collect most of his goals.
Maybe some of the other guys need a reminder but it's disappointing after the first couple games it looked like they had guys crashing the net consistently and after that not so much. |

Never leave the house without it.
You said it - 20 and 88 ... magic on a couple plays last night.
That, along with Rutta playing LD could solve a few issues moving forward because like it or not, I think Franson will play a lot more moving forward.

Welcome aboard JL!
I post every now and then for I feel the regulars always get the posts in before me and most of the time get my same thoughts out, so I avoid the redundancy. Looking forward to not filling in JJ's shoes, but making your own pair that we can enjoy!
With that said, Murphy looked pretty bad out there regardless of the W. Ruuta has really become a kid who I think is really earning his way into a consistent role for a while to come (hope I am not getting ahead of myself here.)

Only caught the 1st period plus abut 8 minutes of the 2nd last night. Although I went to bed with a lead nothing about the game I saw made me feel warm and fuzzy. Thankfully Crawford was solid but, I thought for sure I'd awake to read they lost.
Too many Flyers getting behind our defenders (Kempny). Flyers were able to exit their zone quickly, Hawks passes seemed to be read quite a bit in what I saw. Still a little too much perimeter play and that damn drop pass/back pass to get out of our zone. Makes me almost wish for dump and chase.
But it was a win and shutout w/ a PP goal. Little victories. |
