Carlson is a UFA
Sign him, and the defense is
Scandella-Carlson
McCabe/Guhle-Ristolainen
Guhle/McCabe-Antipin

That’s for next year’s defense

Does that work for you?

- jdfitz77

except there's not guarantee he hits ufa and less than that about him signing here for anything remotely reasonable.

Good luck finding the answer to that question, can’t find anything. On him, my understanding was he has to pass a physical to get sent down to Rochester but he not playing or practicing...
He was out for all of camp and most of the rookie camp, he played 1 period in one of the rookie games.

The point is that by drafting Dareus, the Bills did not give up any of their own assets. The Sabres did for Kane and O'Reilly.
- buffalofan19

That wasn’t the point
U missed it

The point was...
u do what u think is right at the time
Judging it years after is useless

This whole convo is

I think the point should be...
what are we gonna do NOW?

No. Not. Never.

That year. 2015. We shouldn’t have that year.

Ryan O’Reilly is not a once in a lifetime player. He’s a top 6 center. Two of those were traded just yesterday.

- sbroads24

Ok, so in your world we wait till 2016
But why would 2016 have been enough?
Why not wait till 2017 then & get another chance at a great player?
Why not 2018?
And so on
Every year we “wait” gives us another “better” chance

None of u guys EVER ONCE have been able to answer that question

6mil per
We’ve recently been able to sign O’Reilly, who could’ve just walked & Okposo
Both are on the level of Carlson imo

The other potential defense move I had was trading Sam for someone if we can’t sign Carlson
Heck... DO BOTH

The forwards are fine

Jack, O’Reilly, Sam, Kane, Okposo
Mittelstadt, Nylander, Bailey, Baptiste, Pu, Asplund, Fasching

That’s enough to make a reasonably good top9
No, it’s not Pittsburgh...
but it’s enough talent to have 3 lines that can score & 2 really good PP units

As for goalie...
Crawford? His name is brought up with Chicago’s cap situation all the time
Could potentially be available for picks
Other quality goalies are moved from year to year

- jdfitz77

hasek in his prime would be blah on this team

risto is not a 1
scandella is not a 2
mccabe is not a 3

does one elite fix it?

maybe, but with scandella, mccabe and guhle for the lefties, there is not much wiggle room to upgrade w/o moving one of them

my guess is mccabe

So, I like the moves for D.
I disagree that our forwards are fine, and retaining Kane and Sam in the forward ranks, coupled with the D moves I think causes Cap Issues, obviously I did not do the math, but a gut reaction. So Sam has to go to get that 2nd D, Kane is a likely Cap casualty then...we can’t score enough now...does any of Mittelstadt, Pu, Asplund, Fashin, and even Nylander, Bailey, Baptiste replace and increase the Goals lost from Kane, Pommer, and Sam?
Who knows, you are more confident than I am...so maybe, likely not in my mind.
Again, maybe Im too jaded.

We don’t have to have an Anaheim our Nashville level defense to compete for the Cup
Obviously Pitt has more than proven that

What do u think of this?

Cap room to sign Kane, AND JvR & Carlson...
plus almost 7mil to replace Lehner
Trade for Crawford for example

in a perfect world, I would move reinhart to rw, have asplund as 3rd center

which means trade okposo and mccabe

then get an upgraded LD for second pair

JVR is my second favorite LW behind Pacioretty

That’s just crap
We suck with Jack, should we just trade him?

ANSWER THE QUESTION

What specific determining factor tells u when to stop collecting prospects & start trying to win?

I never said to trade O’Reilly right now. What are you talking about?

I’m not even going to make my point for the 100th time for you to miss it.

They made the trades a year or two early.

U haven’t said why the right time would’ve been ‘16 instead of say ‘17, or ‘18, or longer...

Every year we try for a better draft pick adds to the prospect pool... I get that

But how do u determine WHEN it’s time to start winning?

Saying we made a trades a year too early isn’t the same thing as EXPLAINING why

The question I continue to ask u & others is reasonable

I’ve laid out the why.

Ryan O’Reilly is not good enough to be a cup contending teams 2nd best forward.

Those guys are usually found in the top 2-3 picks of the draft. They are rarely traded for.

We were the 8th worst team in 15-16, without O’Reilly and Lehner, and even Kane (although Kane was incredibly bad for half the games he played that year) we are a lot worse in the standings.

We were within 5 points of most teams at the bottom that year. O’Reilly playing huge minutes made a 5 point difference himself. Hell, if we are 3 points worse were in Winnipeg’s spot.

Without O’Reilly, McGinn, Kane, we just might have been 30th, and picking Auston Matthews.
