I’ve laid out the why.
Ryan O’Reilly is not good enough to be a cup contending teams 2nd best forward.
Those guys are usually found in the top 2-3 picks of the draft. They are rarely traded for.
We were the 8th worst team in 15-16, without O’Reilly and Lehner, and even Kane (although Kane was incredibly bad for half the games he played that year) we are a lot worse in the standings.
We were within 5 points of most teams at the bottom that year. O’Reilly playing huge minutes made a 5 point difference himself. Hell, if we are 3 points worse were in Winnipeg’s spot.
Without O’Reilly, McGinn, Kane, we just might have been 30th, and picking Auston Matthews. - sbroads24
rank this teams biggest 5 needs
1. #1 d man
2. #1 rw
3. top 6 LW
4. starting goalie
5. #3 d man |

Extremely doubtful imo
We wouldn’t have played with the joke of a ‘15 lineup I posted
They’d have done something
But u still are missing the point of my question...
Fine, let’s say we didn’t do those trades
U think getting Dubois or Tkachuk would’ve been the missing piece?
I don’t
So then what...
do we tank again last year?
When do we have enough lotto tickets to decide its time to try & win?
Not having Dubois or Tkachuk isn’t what’s wrong with this team or what’s holding them back
And even if it was, we aren’t gonna know if they’d be good enough for a few years still |

Sure...

Cousins might be a possibility |

No, you don’t have to tank, you’re just not that good. Same as right now, without your 2nd line center. Ryan O’Reilly is solid, but we will never win a cup if he’s considered our 2nd best offensive player.
Unless we magically build an amazing D core |

1. Is Carlson a “top pair” defenseman?
Bc I don’t think we can trade Sam for one
2. Does Crosby or Malkin play with a #1 RW? Why does Jack need one?
3. Same answer as above. Not that I wouldn’t bring these guys in, but we also could have them in Nylander & Mittelstadt
4. It’s getting pretty obvious we need a goalie... I’d put it #2 on the list
5. Ideally, but we also have Guhle coming. I’d be ok with McCabe on the 2nd pair for another season to ease him in

That’s fair...
but when do we try to acquire players to try & help us win
Waiting another year seems arbitrary to me
Especially since neither Dubois or Tkachuk are better than O’Reilly... and at this point, I doubt they will be... they certainly don’t look to be like the type of difference maker you think we need
Also...
there’s lots of ways to build a contending team
Before last year, I’m sure you’d have said that a team with Pitt’s defense they had would never win the Cup
And as much as u wanna keep rehashing the past... that’s just done with
What do we do now?
That’s the point I’d say |

I wonder what Ekman-Larsson would cost
reinhart and 2 seconds?
I will be curious if he signs an extension this summer |

Ok... I’m obviously a supporter of Sam
But I’d do that deal in a heartbeat
I just don’t know if we can get that good of a player with him as the main piece |

I don’t think anyone could disagree with that
What did Duchene get?
I’m guessing OEL gets at least that return |

The Ducks seem pretty desperate for scoring
They might be our best bet as a trade partner
They’re also pretty deep with defensemen & have a couple young guys coming up |

I'm not sure that there are many "country" artists left.
It's all commercialized pop music with cowboy hats and boots. |

So the Caps tonight eh?
Housley reportedly had a tough practice focused on doing the right things, preferring to teach then practice on execution...the right approach in my mind.
Now if he can find a way to get Tennysons utilization down to say 9 minutes...and does he come back with Lehner to give him a chance to redeem himself?
That should be an interesting decision.
Good luck boys, Play like your in the NHL! |

You do it when the core you build from within proves it can win games by itself. The Free Agent route should be used to enhance your roster, not build it. You sign guys like Okposo, or even trade a boatload of futures for Kane, when you are 1 or 2 pieces away from contending, not while you are still building to become one. That's how Championships are won. |

Pretty much.
I think what it boils down to is that Murray thought Sam Reinhart was a lot better than he's been the last few years.
He thought he had his core with Eichel, Sam, and Ristolainen. He was right with one of them.
The other two are compliments, not core players |
