that's what I'm saying. A sign and trade helps the team trading him a lot. But unless it's the exact team he wants to sign with, he's taking a chance losing out on the UFA market.

At this point I just don't see him willing to sign a contract to facilitate a trade.

Then we take what teams looking for pure rentals will give. we likely see a 1st + from a contender.

I think if we retain half the cap, he's going to be a valuable add at 1.75 for a rental. I'd love to see the leaves overspend for him. Connor Brown would be unreal. Tanev for Marner I could also stomach.

That's my thinking. The question was how do you maximise the return. Trade him for what you can get. But what you get back isn't going to be impressive.

I think the worse case scenario is not having Guddy on the team next year because what you get in return probably won't be equal in value.

All this has me thinking how a GM can gain back some control in a player's UFA season. Do you trade during a restrictive market, or do you meet the player's contract demands and hope you can offload them in the summer? If there are no restrictions on the number and value of your contract extensions then maybe you can control the market better when teams have time to prepare.

When you take a look at the list of Pending UFA's that will likely be in play, Green is the only one that could get a larger return due to his offensive game. Guddy has been solid in every playoff game he has even been in, eating a lot of minutes, and plays a style that is needed in the playoffs.

His playoff beard alone is worth a 2nd or B prospect

Guddy is from Ottawa, i'd bet they could get something in place with a sign/trade.
- Retinalz

Guddy ain't goin' anywhere...he'll be a Canuck next year.

Assuming he's open to signing here, what's the highest cap hit number you'd be willing to go up to on a 5 or 6 year deal with a limited NTC included?

Green is not going to bench the Sedins lol. And yeah, they weren't effective against Pit and are slow as hell now but you guys have quickly forgotten that they were our best line against NJ when the Horvat line struggled.
- Nucker101

Yes probably true but imo anyone can be sat now if TG wants his line-up in. There has to be a point when a $7m contract for an old vet gets a maintenance day off if a better choice is available in TGโ€™s opinion.

.@renlavoietva identified Toronto and Ottawa as teams that may target Gudbranson. Both have needs on defense.

Iโ€™d add the Oilers Avโ€™s Caps Bruins Yotes to name a few teams to that list.

The problem is that sometimes teams aren't interested in trading for a potential rental player this early just in case they fall out of the playoff picture. You're right that he'd have more value to a buyer now, but there may be less buyers since GM's of bubble teams would probably be gun shy to make that type of move right now.
- Nucker101

True unless a backroom deal on an extension is made. Who knows tbh.

Ok, just say you sign him to a $6.5x6 with the intention of trading him immediately. He gets $3.5M a season now. Remaining daily cap hit is $2,879,032. What if that $6.5 puts you over the Cap even just for an instant while you make the trade?
- bloatedmosquito

The cap hit kicks in for the new contract in next season & teams can go over the cap by 10% in the offseason.

What is he making now? $3.5MM?? probably something similar. He will get more on the open market so I anticipate he is traded.

As a UFA they may target him. Caps/Bruins MAYBE try for him as they are still win now teams, Oilers are very unlikely and Av's/Yotes are impossible. only playoff teams are looking at Guddy this year.

If he stays healthy & plays a smart rugged game Iโ€™d give him $5m max. Idk if he overvalues himself but lack of offence reduces his value but that said idk lol
