Knights or if the ducks get things going imo

I want a first and B - prospect

- GERBE!!!75PTS

I was looking at realistic options.

I would like a lot of things, but is Kane going to garner my hopes and dreams?

I doubt it.

Just to play devil's advocate here, because i think this particular way of looking at it gets overlooked.

When talking about Kane, say he does make 7.5 x 7 - The Sabres don't need to find $7.5m in cap space, they need to find the difference between his current salary and his new salary, which in this case would be $2m. That's still a lot of money, but when you look at it like this, when you're already paying $5.5m, it's a lot easier to swallow.

Point being, the Sabres can easily keep Kane if they want. Trade Girgs and you just paid for Kane's raise

- jcragcrumple

Isn't Girgs on a one year deal anyway?

Edit:

He is not.

It's not just about fitting him in. It's fitting him in with enough room to still improve this team to the point it's a championship contender. If they want to sign Kane, and still say that they are serious about becoming a cup contender with a straight face, Okposo needs to get moved.

sabres need value contracts

not many on this roster

- homiedclown

Agreed - even the "cheap" guys aren't really value. Girgs, Larsson, Antipin, Beaulieu. They don't cost much, but they also kind of suck. Pouliot and even Pominville right now are arguably the best value. Well, and Jack still on his rookie deal

I disagree to a certain extent. I'm hoping that Housley can be the "Defense whisperer" and elevate some players beyond what would otherwise be their ceiling. Move Bogo and cut ties with gorges and you save $9m. 2 of that covers Kane's raise, $4m for a decent #3d, 3 million on a legit fast, LW to play with O'Reilly

That's not how it works though, gotta look at the whole picture. you can't pay 7.5 mil to another winger when you're defence still requires 2 high end adds.

yeah less than a quarter into the season half this site was done with McCabe and Risto. I wouldn't count on it.

He also just put together a winning game plan with 4 dmen who have no business being NHL regulars. We'll see.

That's sort of my point though. I'm not sure we need 2 high-end adds. Give Housley a deep, but not high-end heavy group of Dmen that can all share the load. 6 dmen making 3.5-4.5 mil each. Good, but not great across 3 pairs. It worked for pittsburgh.

a) he absolutely is but they won without him because

b) Crosby, Malkin and Kessel. Jack isn't Crosby, Kane isn't Kessel and ROR isn't Malkin

the problem with the current core

if you pay kane 7.5 per

and keep okposo, ror , risto and eichel of course

you have 37 mil tied up in 5 players

if the cap doesn't go up, you have 38 mil for the other 17 guys

if half these are decent players
mccabe, mittlelstadt, pu, bailey, baptiste, davidsson, nylander, asplund, guhle, borgen

etc, where is the money going to come from 3 to 4 years later?

and I am not figuring in the skunk factor or goalie situation

is eichel, ror, okposo, risto, kane the 5 core players you want to build your team around for the next 5 years

is there one you want off the list?
2?

and our other 15 skaters are not close to their other 15 skaters

IMO the bigger issue

Use Moulson's $5m for an actual good winger, top 6 is really good, which I guess constitutes a hot take around these parts.

Launch the bottom 6 into space, bring in speed. Resign Pouliot 2 years, 3.5m.

We are good. Cap will go up

Perfect world for me next year: let gorges walk. Trade Bogo to someone with a 3rd. Trade Moulson after we pay the bonus, trade Larsson and girgs. Resign Kane. Net gain - $15m.

Kane-Eichel-Pominville
New Guy (4m)-O'Reilly-Okposo
New guy (2m) -Mittelstadt-Reinhart (optimistic, i know)
Pouliot- New Guy (1.5m) - New Guy (1m)

Scandella-Risto
McCabe-New Guy (4 mil)
Guhle-Beaulieu

Lehner

If these players are decent, and you draft well, then you can move them for cheaper/younger.

That would be my guess.

We will likely embody the Pens model, and have to cycle in good young players on the cheap and move them out when necessary.

Kane is a good player, and if he'd take short term (3-4 years tops, i'm in)

But big, physical power forwards fall off a cliff in their late twenties, early thirties.

Lucic, Perry, Backes, Ryan, etc.

With his injury history, he'd be albatross by 30

assuming you could make those above trades, that's a fringe playoff team unless the 4 mil d-man is crazy underpaid. Wouldnt shock me if they chose to have mittelstadt in the ahl to start.

Theoretically, could Nylander, Baptiste, and Bailey be some of those openings?

No one seems to like the idea of Bailey and Baptiste playing in the bottom 6, but i'd be fine with it. I'd be fine with Erod as the 4th line center too, or the extra forward

Probably but as has been mentioned several times, you dont tank for fringe playoff runs.
This team still has the potential to be great, i really believe that. But paying 7.5 mil over 7 years for a power forward with injury troubles while you still desperately need help on D seems like the exact opposite of good value.

Makes sense. If you don't resign him, you're guaranteeing no playoffs next year, though IMO. Sabres already need 1 top 6 winger, and this would make it 2.
