Makes sense. If you don't resign him, you're guaranteeing no playoffs next year, though IMO. Sabres already need 1 top 6 winger, and this would make it 2. - jcragcrumple
You can easily sign someone who can produce with Eichel, for about half of that 7.5 mil.
Pouliot is on pace for the same amount of 5 on 5 goals as Kane scored last year. |

Probably but as has been mentioned several times, you dont tank for fringe playoff runs.
This team still has the potential to be great, i really believe that. But paying 7.5 mil over 7 years for a power forward with injury troubles while you still desperately need help on D seems like the exact opposite of good value. - Sabresfan-365
move mccabe and kane
use assets and picks for OEL and Manson/Vatanen
OEL-Risto
Scandella-Manson/Vatanen
Guhle-Antipin--Beaulieu-Fedun
that works |

If you're bringing in Cogliano or Bailey, it's not to replace Kane. Those guys have never produced like Kane.
Grabner is a nice player, but he's had 1 exceptional goal-scoring season, 2 good ones and 6 bad-ish ones.
No player is going to replace Kane in terms of scoring and physicality. His style is unique, but in terms of attitude toward the game, Ovi is probably the closest comparable in terms of style |

My counterpoint here would be that his uniqueness makes him expendable. if hes so one of a kind (i.e him and ovi) then that means countless teams have won without a player like that.
Edit: i worded this poorly cause i havent had my coffee yet but it's not like his play style is a requirement for building a championship top 6/9 |

And when Tim Thomas won the cup, no goalie was playing that style anymore, but he still won the cup. Having a unique player is an asset, not a liability imo |

disagree
you put them with an upper end first liner, their production goes up big time
see plug and play wingers with crosby, malkin, backstrom, stamkos, p kane, kopitar, etc, etc, etc |

how is pommer's production with eichel vs the previous 3 years? |

Pominville had scored 30 goals in this league before though. With the exception of Grabner, those guys had never shown an ability to do that. I'm sure they would see an uptick in goals, but to assume Eichel can make them Kane-level goalscorers is an assumption i'd rather not have to test |

Cogliano with Getzlaf and Kesler is leaps and bounds better than anything he did in Edmonton.
He has a drop off when Kesler and Getzlaf aren't on the ice. Rakell is a nice player, but he's not to the level of 15/17. |

All i'm trying to say is, Cogliano is not as good of a natural goal scorer as Kane. I see both sides of the Kane debate, but if the Sabres get rid of him, they do so at their own peril. Right now you have a tough, fast goal scorer that works with your best player. If they want to change that up, the Sabres risk looking for a replacement for a long time. It depends on the return for Kane as well.
It's funny how a year ago, some fans wanted Kane moved for nothing and other teams' fans were saying he's worthless. Things have certainly changed |

the problem with the current core
if you pay kane 7.5 per
and keep okposo, ror , risto and eichel of course
you have 37 mil tied up in 5 players
if the cap doesn't go up, you have 38 mil for the other 17 guys
if half these are decent players
mccabe, mittlelstadt, pu, bailey, baptiste, davidsson, nylander, asplund, guhle, borgen
etc, where is the money going to come from 3 to 4 years later?
and I am not figuring in the skunk factor or goalie situation
is eichel, ror, okposo, risto, kane the 5 core players you want to build your team around for the next 5 years
is there one you want off the list?
2? - homiedclown
Ideally, I would love to see RoR and Reinhart off to NYI for an extended JT. And, Kane's value will never be higher than it is now, so given what Duchene just got Colorado, he might actually bring back a sold young D-man plus a pick or prospect. If I could make the JT trade happen, I'd be more than happy going into next year with a top 6 that looks like this.
Nylander -Eichel- Pommer
Mittlestadt -JT- Okposo
We have enough talent in the system to comprise a good bottom 6

I would take Jacob Larsson + a good pick from Anaheim for Kane.
use the pick + to add another D.
You then have
Player -X via trade
Jacob Larsson
Brendan Guhle

Some back reading done
A few things:
The AHL is not a head hunting ground by veteran players who are p!ssed they are in the AHL. The Girgensons concussion was given to him by Richard Panik who was a guy still working his way up the ranks before he even stepped foot in the NHL when he was 22 years old.
I don't see the Sabres and Rangers being good trading partners at all especially for a player like Kane.
I wouldn't sign Kane to anything longer than a 6 year deal. 6 for 6 is as much and as far as I would go.
One of ROR or Okposo will have to go in the next 2 years IMO to clear up more cap space to build a better core, especially if Okposo can't put it back together (he has improved the last few weeks)
Reinhart is starting to show some speed carrying the puck through the neutral zone but it's not enough.
I also agree they need more value contracts! Pouliot is a value contract and since it's only for a year I expect him to be moved at the deadline if this team can't figure out how to play game in game out.
Lehner played well against Washington but I am not sure what he was doing on their goal.
Also Derek Grant...9 points in 15 games...WTF

That would sound good to me. And, I really like Kane, I don't want to lose him because he's one of the few how can consistently score even if he is benefiting from Eichel. But, he'll want big money and term, and I just don't trust his effort once he gets it, we have too many bums already. I also can't believe what Col got for Duchene, so if that's the market right now and we have the most coveted player available currently, than I have to agree with GMBotts moving him for a haul.

Maybe.
He hasn't proven much outside of contract years.
Be that through injury or the construct of a team, he's likely going to be a contract like ROR if he's making north of $7M.
Just my opinion.
I don't know if he can live up to that level of a contract long-term. |

That is his highest point total since 2011-2012 (57 points)
Sure he brings other stuff to the table but at the end of the day if you're paying a guy 7 million for 45 points that's not a recipe for success |

on pouliot it seems like ever since i ripped him for being terrible he has been pulling it together. he has been a great pick up since then.
Lehner just isn't good enough.. his movement is clunky which makes me think he and isn't flexible or fast enough which leads to the washington goal.. he over pursued the pass and wasn't quick enough or flexible enough to make it look like he even had a chance on the play. i am noticing more and more that he just can't recover.. |

On that goal yes, I am not sure what he was looking at, he clearly over pursued almost like he didn't realize there was a Caps player there.
But I have noticed his movement has been actually more controlled. He still however can't figure out the reverse VH position. |
