Marner put up 61 as a rook.
He’s only 20.

His upside is even higher than nurse’s imo. Loving nurses game right now, but I still don’t believe he’s ever anything more than a 2 way 2nd pairing guy. And I’m not sure he’s got the pp chops to ever put up any eye popping numbers.
Where marner undoubtedly has the chops to be a first line 70-80 point forward

Plus - he’s still got another season on elc.
He can drive a line and adds huge depth beyond the Matthews /nylander line.

I doubt Toronto would do it

Plus, it’s a classic case of buy low -
Sell high

A month ago, nurse wouldn’t even be considered for the likes of marner. But since marner is struggling abit as u say and nurse has figured a few things out— it’s at least plausible

I kinda get where max was coming from as far as what he’ll cost later- but yeah, this never ending cost analysis of never acquiring players that are “too good” is abit silly imo

End of the day- I think a high talent scorer on the right side is exactly what this team needs to get to where we hoped it would be.

Having puju and yammy is nice, but neither are sure things and we need help now. But I totally see the reticence.

- HB77

When our GM committed 6mil/year to an aging, depreciating LW like Lucic, he doomed the team to constantly need cost analysis. Making moves without mind for the cap is how you get into the very situation Chiarelli has the team in now. It has nothing to do with how good the player is or isn't; it's about how bad his acquisition would make the rest of the team just a year or two down the road.

I have no issue with Marner as he was the guy I was pushing for before we won the lottery in 2015, but if you wanna see a GM REALLY lose value in trades, imagine Chiarelli in a real cap crunch.

With Nurse gone, we'd no longer even have the option to consider moving Sekera (or Russell if we could) because we'd be crippling our D depth. So, that would leave us having to either find a suitor for Lucic (maybe Florida's old school GM would take him), trade Nuge or lose almost all our RFA roster players (Caggiula, Slepyshev, Benning, etc). Even with Nuge gone, we might still be hard-pressed to fit those RFAs once Marner's 2nd contract kicked in.

It wouldn't be an impossible feat to build a team like that, but it would take a shrewd contract negotiator to pull it off and even then, the team would likely be rather shallow.

Pulj it is then.
Unless Chia can whip up a wizard trade.

Either way, it was just an outside the box idea, but I guess his lack of foot speed and stamina overshadow whatever he could possibly bring in, which I completely understand.

I like it.

Addresses skill AND speed, while bringing in a vet in the form of Grabner. However, is Boston even considering trading Vatrano, and would they for those assets? He's young, skilled, fast, and he projects to be a top 6 or at the very least a top 9 forward from what I've seen (from the limited bruins games I've watched) and heard. Unless you are putting a lot of stock into Khaira's value.

The price for Grabner seems fair. However, I would be more inclined to put Grabner on the 2nd line instead of the 3rd since he would provide a good boost in speed for that line (speed wise, Grabner>Jewels>Strome). Jewels is a fast player and coupled with LD, they should be fine speed wise.

Vatrano has been running on the 4th line with no PP time with the arrival of DeBrusk and Bjork and there's been word that his name has been bandied about. Considering he was Chiarelli's last move as Boston GM, I can see him still having some interest in him.

Sweeney and Neely are dbags that don't want to do business with him out of spite for him getting fired from his job apparently. I seriously doubt we do a deal with Boston.

No way man. If they oil trade their only BBC, they will have to compensate by getting a gun, a truck lifted really high and only working out their upper bodies and completely neglecting legs.

All the Oilers have to keep doing is keep limping their way into OT and have Drai and McDavid cash in. Love it. Totally sustainable

The thesis of these paragraphs are that chiarelli absolitely fuked this team and would again.
Either way, I’d rather deal with cap consequences in time after giving myself a chance, than just remaining average over that span and save cap. Your big picture doesn’t ever actually take into account winning in the short term

With Nurse gone, we'd no longer even have the option to consider moving Sekera (or Russell if we could) because we'd be crippling our D depth. Even with Nuge gone, we might still be hard-pressed to fit those RFAs once Marner's 2nd contract kicked in.

Sekera shouldn’t be moved. It has to be russel. His play is already declining and he’s been passed by nurse most definitely and even benning somewhat (more than just pairings, but actual tangible play). I’d be looking to unload him this offseason and would absolutely sweeten the pot With a pick/prospect to make it happen.

It wouldn't be an impossible feat to build a team like that, but it would take a shrewd contract negotiator to pull it off and even then, the team would likely be rather shallow.

One of the main issues with the 4x4 contract with a no move for Russel was that, although he played 2nd pairing last year, it was reasonable to assume that he would be passed on the depth chart by both Nurse and Benning within a year or two. Just didn’t think it’d happen so soon. But it was always best case despite the panic move chia made

Both have passed Russell, Nurse has passed him due to a giant step forward and Benning has passed him notwithstanding an uneven season (playing better now) due to a regression from Russell.

The regression from Russell was also predictable as it was clearly obvious that his simple yet fairly effective game last year was largely due from having seks carry him. A fact which has now become even more abundantly clear.

Russell has had his minutes cut because he’s been passed on the depth chart and because he hasn’t played well. He’s even struggled to anchor the 3rd pair with Gryba. Nurse’s #’s with grybs we’re much better.

It’s the contract we need to ditch this offseason more than any other (even looch) if we want any chance of keeping nuge

1) Everyone was ready to suck Slepy's Richard after his play in the playoffs.
2) Strome was supposed to be somewhat of a replacement for Eberle.
3) Puju was always going to start the year in the minors unless he really earned it.

Dr. Drai didn't exactly tear up the AHL before he came up for good.
