I wish this Kane "saga" would just end
Either with a good player/team contract or a trade
I just don't like talking about it all the time
Over the last season and the 15 games so far this year he has been the player this team has needed and wants. Someone who can score goals.
Who knows what would have happened if he was healthy all year. With or without Jack he was putting the puck in the net.
I do understand the other side of the argument. 43 points last year 28 of them goals. Goals are super important but I think we would like to see some more assists as well.
He is playing like he always has this season, the only difference is he has played in the first 15 games this year. He is healthy. Can he stay healthy is the question.

Think he moves Moulson before the start of next year? That would clear a good chunk of change anyways. - RhinoFan
Bogo is the priority imo because he has more years. If someone wants to take moulsons contract for a 3rd or 4th after pegula pays the bonus, awesome. If not, waive him for the 1m savings. I was also just looking at the cap, and after a credit of 500k next year (which is weird) we have an 800k cap hit for 4 years to pay for Hodgson. That's severe.
The money for Kane isn't a problem imo. Gorges's contract ending will pay for the 1.5-2m raise.
I have 0 issues with Kane being on this team right now. He seems to have got his head on straight and is well liked by his teammates. (which was not the case two years ago) He's also a pretty damn good player lately, which also wasn't the case his first year here.
The problem is he's getting severely over rated by many. He's a one-dimensional goal scorer. He plays his own game. When he's off, or not playing well, he hurts his linemates. Which shouldn't be the case for a winger.
IMO, he should be on another line than Eichel. He should be on a line who's job it is to shoot the puck and crash the net. - sbroads24
After the infamous bar incident in Buffalo during draft weekend, many on the hockeybuzz forum said we would be lucky if we got a second round draft pick for Kane. Then he got injured and didn't start scoring until late December. At the bottom, he might have fetched a 3rd and people would have been happy. Anyway, if we are out of it by March, I hope Botts trades him for a large haul. Assuming he stays healthy and continues to produce, we should be able to get a 1st plus a good prospect for him.
The other thing is that Kane is 26 and never sniffed a playoff game. Plus he is greedy and is a big city/big lights kind of guy. I don't think there is any chance he signs with Buffalo unless we severely overpaid in terms of tenure and $$. Hopefully i am wrong.

The bigger question is the risk on term - jcragcrumple
People forget the cap dump we saved by trading ennis. I still think moulson plays out his term here in buffalo. Buyouts push money past next year, when we might actually be competitive?
Yes moulson sucks. Not saying keep him, he's great. Saying they keep him like gorges. He must bring something intangible in the locker room? Maybe he helps tie skates? How much worse is he than nolan aside from the $

I just think Bogo will be around next year. Housley likes him apparently, but also the term would drive the price way up.
Agree about Gorges salary being a big help, but also the questions in goal. If Lehner continues to be mediocre, I wonder if he's moved elsewhere as well. Just think Moulson is tying up not only the money, but the spot as well. At least with Bogo when he's healthy he can play in the NHL...Moulson not so much.

That wont be the reason he doesn't sign. He has said a number of times that he has run out of patience with missing the playoffs. I was hopeful that this year could have been a playoff year or at least close to it and that he would see enough progress to stay. I do think he likes it here and he seems to have a good relationship with Eichel. But I really believe if we miss the playoffs again that it will be the final straw.

Definitely possible, and maybe Eichel advocated for him to be the extra forward instead of being waived because Eichel lived with him.
Like you said though, cap wise, Sabres are decent. We added money in the Minn trade, but it's productive money. And with Kane, you're not adding 7 mil to the cap, you're adding his raise, which isnt a problem to accomodate.
If you move bogos money, theres plenty to accommodate an upgrade on the blueline
I dont think its that complicated. This team needs to start operating in a way to obtain as much value as possible to compensate all that was wasted.
Kane is probably the easiest decision. you don't overpay one dimensional players period. Hes a classic sell high candidate. - Sabresfan-365
If Pommer stays with Jack, he's gonna pot 55-60 points this year and next hopefully. After that, he could take a discount to be on the team because he likes it here.
I'm a huge Vanek homer, but I think Kane brings more than Vanek did. Keep him and you'll find a way to pay for him.

He's good = keep him - jcragcrumple
if we overpaid to keep every player who was just good we'd be making miracle runs to 9th.
He's not someone you invest in long term and hes not someone you pay 7+mil. so you've really only got one option here. Well only one where the value to the team is good.

Kane is in a contract year, he realizes that “if” he stays healthy, stays out of trouble off the ice and finishes top 2 or 3 in points on this team, he has a chance to get paid big bucks.
With his style of play, I don’t think he can keep putting up the numbers or stay healthy for more than 4 or 5 years.
I’m guessing he’ll probably want a long term deal worth 7 or 8 million per.
Extend or trade ?
