If you don't play him 47 minutes a night his injuries might cut back. - LeftCoaster
unfortunately, if we acquired him, we would need him to play the 21 minutes he's been averaging over the last few years. |

I liked Burkie as a character.
But he was a bad GM.
Very bad in drafting.
Bad to very bad in trades.
And very bad in picking his coaches.
He was great with the media though always entertaining. - MaximusAurelius
He's responsible for Kadri, JVR, Rielly, Brown, Bozak etc. Just think if he'd have drafted Seguin and Hamilton too! |

he won some, he lost some.
his biggest mistake was over-estimating the team he inherited. if he slow played it instead of going all-in, it may have turned out differently. |

IIRC, posting that on Hockeybuzz was a bannable offence.

Biggest mistake was not wanting to tank.
2nd: the Kessel trade (related to first) - not bc of Kessel, but giving up the 1st rounders.
3rd: Komisarek signing
4th: Schenn draft (he traded up from 7th ovr to 5th overall, giving up a 2nd rounder and a 3rd rounder).
If Leafs had tanked in 2008 (Burke picked up Gerbe who won some points for the Leafs) they would have drafted 4-5-6 and gotten OEL. Kadri is great - but OEL would have been fantastic.
EDIT: BIGGEST MISTAKE by far was not wanting to give up Luke Friggin Schenn to move up from 7 to 1st overall - Tavares. |

Burke is an idiot. Sure, he won a cup but he didn't build that team. Bryan Murray did.
His tenure in Toronto was a flop. He built a team that was neither tough nor talented. His two major acquisitions in Kessel and Phaneuf were highly flawed players. Certainly not the type you build your team around.
He recent proclamations about the Toronto media have been dispelled by the Shanahan regime which has flourished by installing competent people like Lamoriello, Hunter and Babcock. Gone are the days of stupid "look at me" proclamations. Trading up for Taveres being one. Burke loved the attention but couldn't handle the heat when it went bad |

I don't know about anyone else, but Steve Simmons is a pile of trash. I mean, he's already written more than one article about how the Leafs are definitely going to win a cup in the next few year. Pretty sure one was titled "Plan the Parade"...like come on man |

Kessel is a highly flawed player? Because he doesn't have the best two way game? Too busy focusing on putting the puck in the net? Couldn't make the Leafs into a playoff team all on his own while being centered by Bozak? You're delusional. |

That would have been dumb.
Luke Schenn and Nazek Kadri have played a total of 1090 nhl games between the two of them and Tavares has only played 604.
Obviously the islanders would have had to throw in someone who would have played an additional 486 games up until now. |

i have a hard time believing this given the isles could have drafted schenn the year before; but instead chose to trade down with us.
also, the value seems way too low for how much tavares was hyped coming into that draft year. |

burkie in the interview directly after drafting kadri (kadri sitting next to him on the table) was asked if he was close to moving up to first.
he said they had the chance to do so, but it would have meant giving up luke schenn.
(he said as well they looked at going top3 and keep 7th overall, but i assume nyi never would have taken schenn + someting else than 7th ovr for 1st ovr).
so either burke is lying, or indeed was an option at the time. |
