That would have been dumb.
Luke Schenn and Nazek Kadri have played a total of 1090 nhl games between the two of them and Tavares has only played 604.
Obviously the islanders would have had to throw in someone who would have played an additional 486 games up until now. - TheMussel
This is my favourite meme ever. The gift that keeps on giving! Scott Cullen, you keep being you, dawg!
On another note, I'm happy the Leafs did the right thing and called up Sosh.

burkie in the interview directly after drafting kadri (kadri sitting next to him on the table) was asked if he was close to moving up to first.
he said they had the chance to do so, but it would have meant giving up luke schenn.
(he said as well they looked at going top3 and keep 7th overall, but i assume nyi never would have taken schenn + someting else than 7th ovr for 1st ovr).
so either burke is lying, or indeed was an option at the time. - MaximusAurelius
there was something to it. still, i suspect it would have been schenn, kadri and 2 1sts.

Ahem, only the genius of Travis Yost could bring us stats insights like adding games played together to come up with a new stat called TGPBDP or total games played by different players for all you laypeople

Thus ending the Gauthier era in Toronto.
Although the Marlies are also in Toronto, so... |

Yost was one of the best bloggers on here. He was particularly good during the lockout.
And then he went all statsy on us.
He's been terrible ever since. |

Biggest mistake was not wanting to tank.
2nd: the Kessel trade (related to first) - not bc of Kessel, but giving up the 1st rounders.
3rd: Komisarek signing
4th: Schenn draft (he traded up from 7th ovr to 5th overall, giving up a 2nd rounder and a 3rd rounder).
If Leafs had tanked in 2008 (Burke picked up Gerbe who won some points for the Leafs) they would have drafted 4-5-6 and gotten OEL. Kadri is great - but OEL would have been fantastic.
EDIT: BIGGEST MISTAKE by far was not wanting to give up Luke Friggin Schenn to move up from 7 to 1st overall - Tavares. - MaximusAurelius
You mean....not being able to tank.
I dont recall any trade involving moving up to 1st overall. No way NYI would have ever dont that. |

This comment does Paul Stastny a disservice (regardless of the clever pun)
Can we just say that he went Sam Bennett on us? |

ok so here it is. the claim burke made about l.schenn plus (the 7th?), was for #2. hedman. that's pretty bad.
the other guy they wanted to move up for was b.schenn. looks like oel was not on their minds. guys like kassian and cowen were; as was trading down for a 3rd.
could have been worse or better than kadri. that's burke in nutshell. |

Burke kept on acquiring some veteran players (Gerbe example) instead of going full tank.
He himself bragged about keeping Schenn instead of not moving up to first overall... whether you believe him or not, that's another thing - I'm quite sure he's not making it up though. As the other poster said, maybe Schenn + 7th overall + another 1st for 1st overall (Tavares).
Hindsight would have been better to make that deal and build around Tavares then to give up the 2 1st rounders for Kessel. |

Burke bragged about how he jump-started the 5-year plan - making it a 3-year plan.
In his defence, he was kinda correct.
It normally took the Leafs 5 years to admit their 5 year plan wasn't working.
With Burkie, we knew after 3 years. |

To be fair, Hedman wasn't spectacular in his first few years in the league. We would have chased him right out of town before he reached what he is now. |

true. IIRC, he was more of a project pick his draft year. correct me if i'm wrong.
kadri and jvr are pretty good assets to end up with.
burke can still go (frank) his hat. |

He states he could have done in reference to moving up to the top 3. not specifically the 1st.
NYI was not trading Tavares at the time. |

it sucked he was a Sens blogger. it would have been great to get some insightful Leaf blogs here. Instead of twitter update blogs about what the leafs did several hours ago |

He never said it was for the 1st overall. The question was the top 3 or top pick.
Tavares was not being traded.
I think ownership wanted to quickly be successful, kinda forced his hand. That with his cockiness and desire for big truculent guys......ended in making some bad moves. |
