To be fair, Hedman wasn't spectacular in his first few years in the league. We would have chased him right out of town before he reached what he is now. - markmark
Very true. Also, Kadri and Seguin would have caused the great Canadian cocaine shortage. Their condo would have been dustier than a chalk factory. |

yeah - i found another video. he says nyi is not moving the pick and the option to move up was for #2. - Tumbleweed
Exactly.
1st overall was never an option.
Kadri + Schenn for Hedman...or most likely Duchene or Kane as Burke stated we wanted to stay North American.
Glad that never went through.
Schenn was complete garbage but we got JVR.

draft table interview (with Kadri) he mentions that he could have moved up to acquire 1st/2nd pick (he replied 'we could have done it' when asked about drafting Tavares) |

Apologies for coming into your Sacred room. (Ooooooommmmmm)
What the heck am I supposed to do now..... Burke...aka... The Dark Lord Sith Master Burke..... hates the Toronto Media.... aka the Kindergarten Teacher. (The fans themselves are the Kinder....never mind, I will go on.)
So the guy I hate, hates the group I hate.
What's a guy like me to do? Whose side do I take?

No he never says it specifically about the 1st. only in reference to the top 3.
Tavares was never going to moved. |

Will he even play?? I feel like Babdong would play Martin with one arm over any other 4th line option because he has some sort of weird love for him. |

You mean....not being able to tank.
I dont recall any trade involving moving up to 1st overall. No way NYI would have ever dont that. - Fakepartofme
Burkie was doomed to fail in TO. Problem with the team had more to do with ownership than with the GM. The salary cap - instituted in the 2005-06 season changed fortunes in the NHL and hurt no team more than the Leafs. Greedy filthy disgusting ownership and total incompetence among management was the only thing that precluded the Leafs from winning many cups with no cap. They could have easily loaded up like the Yankees but never did. As insignificant as it seems the Leiweke hiring and Shanny later were the keys to a now thriving team. Was not entirely on Burkie not by any stretch. Good riddance Richard Peddie and all his money grubbing cronies |
|
|
|
Biggest mistake was not wanting to tank.
2nd: the Kessel trade (related to first) - not bc of Kessel, but giving up the 1st rounders.
3rd: Komisarek signing
4th: Schenn draft (he traded up from 7th ovr to 5th overall, giving up a 2nd rounder and a 3rd rounder).
If Leafs had tanked in 2008 (Burke picked up Gerbe who won some points for the Leafs) they would have drafted 4-5-6 and gotten OEL. Kadri is great - but OEL would have been fantastic.
EDIT: BIGGEST MISTAKE by far was not wanting to give up Luke Friggin Schenn to move up from 7 to 1st overall - Tavares. - MaximusAurelius
this was Cliff Fletcher deal. |

it's a bit ambiguous.
the question was '.. moving up to top three, and get a crack at tavares'
burkie literally replies: 'we could have done it - i mean, we could have made that pick'.
i understand he is referring to picking tavares there. [he then later says 'first or second pick']

Ahem, only the genius of Travis Yost could bring us stats insights like adding games played together to come up with a new stat called TGPBDP or total games played by different players for all you laypeople

I honestly think the whole thing was just typical Burke bravado. "We could have done it" probably meant that he could pay a stupid amount for that pick just like any of the other 28 teams could have. |

For the first time in ages, maybe ever, the Leafs have a number of things:
1. A management group and coaching staff that isn't manipulated by the media
2. Doesn't have internal leaks about their (potential) dealings
3. Competency
4. An insane list of credentials
5. Respect from the entire league
6. A plan
7. Patience
8. Toronto becoming a more attractive destination
9. Ownership that cares about winning
10. Buy-in and patience in the team's plan and direction from the fan base
For years we had to deal with a revolving door of idiots, blowhards, puppets, inexperience, quick fixes, lack of vision and easily manipulated fools. Cleaning house of pathetic ownership, management and players is what needed to happen decades ago, but nobody had the balls or vision to do so until now.
There isn't a team and fan base that has suffered more than us. Sure, other teams have had their trials, tribulations and droughts, but not on this scale. Not with a fan base this large and this loyal.
Morons like Simmons, Feschuk, Cox, along with Leafs haters and fans of other teams continue to try find something negative about the state of this team, but it's becoming harder and harder, and the more they try the dumber they look and sound... So let them.
Good times are ahead and thank (frank)ing God they're finally here! Soak it in. |

Off the top of my head, I don't think either of these guys are on 2-way contracts.
It's one of the ways the Leafs flex their monetary might. |

You need to keep your trolling story straight.
You hated the Leafs because you hated Nonis, not Burke.
And penis envy, of course. |
