It's good to have an open discussion and I am super negative on sam. He fits in great with eichel. Want to like him moving forward :
My understanding is:
He can be a complete dueshebag off the ice at times. Self centered and entitled.
He really didn't fit or stand out on the 3rd line
He/his agent were looking/ comparing him to ryan johansen. 8 years 8 per. Ryan plays center and was the 4th pick a few years back.
His agent projected sam to be 60 point guy moving forward
The sabres basically said we aren't even going there. Let's see: how you do at center, On your own.
Jbotts knows that he can produce with Jack.
Sabres want him long term, but he needs to be realistic about his contract. Pretty sure Homie relayed the same information.
He got a little spanking and hopefully an ego/reality check, playing with out our generational talent and bikemate/housemate - Boss34
Maybe putting Sam at 3C was a smart negotiating play by Botts. If, Sam stayed with Eichel all year and put up 60+ points he would be looing at a five year 6M per deal. But, now having proved he's not competent at center and can't make his wingers better, he's looking a 2 year, 4M bridge deal. And, even if Botteril wants to trade Sam, he can put him back with Jack, get him some points to up his value.

Scottie Pippin made it to the HOF riding Jordan's jock. - Der Kaiser
The year Jordan retired Pippen led the team in ppg, rebs, ast, and steals and was the only reason they made it to the playoffs.
Pippen was a far better player than most give him credit for and made others around him better. See BJ Armstrong and Horace Grant being selected to the all star team, their only ones mind you. |

Hey the knock on the kid is he doesn't make others around him better. Which at this moment is in fact true.
Let's not compare him to a guy voted as a top 50 player of all time. |

He also has a really weird skill: he's terrific from behind the net. Which is good, i guess? |

Some positive's from last night, Sam had 3 points, Eichel was the best player on the Sabres and played with some attitude , and the power play showed up!!! - gordong
Jack was great in OT when he let Crosby get away from him and then left Sheary wide open for the game winner
Showed some real leadership there when he sulked his way off the ice |

He does well on Eichel's wing. He doesn't necessarily make everyone better, but I would argue he makes Eichel better. |

Worth it, considering the little ball tickle Hornqvist gave him infront of the net. |

Watched the replay of last night's game and it does seem Lehner trusts Gorges out there on 2 on 1s more than the others. He seems like the only guy that knows how to cut off the pass. If you look at the Sabres opportunities, the Pens looked like how the Sabres Dmen have been on those opportunities this season. - adambuffalo
Gorges had a nice game. Even when Reeves ran him over twice in one shift he kept his composure. He just got back up and played his game. Too many guys get thrown off when hit like that. |

Soo.....reading all of these comments I have to make a point.
Isn't Reinharts MO that hes so good and has such good vision and hockey instincts that he opens up the ice for his line mates and makes them better?
That's how GMTM sold us on him.
He is nothing near that. He has to play with the top line or he is invisible?
Pull the cord and trade him for a top 4 D. |

I never considered Sam to be a take over the game type of player, I think he is an excellent complimentary player but not someone like Eichel who can take over games.
I feel like Reinhart is a guy who you look at near the end of the season and cant figure out how he got 50 points, but hes a quietly effective player, but not one that elevates those around him, or makes the big flashy plays.
I think trading him at this point is a mistake as his value has to be quite low. |

Agree 100%. Jack is an abomination on defense, not unlike the rest of the Sabres forwards |

I thought there might have been a slewfoot, too, but they were both off balance.
The Pens seem to have a thing about the sabres packages. |

I guess he should have been smiling and cheering that his team lost again due to his missed assignment, all players make mistakes. |

I thinks that's a tad harsh, hes been noticeable on the back check when teams are coming back at us.
Jack cant do everything. |

I don't claim he can and my comment is not a reflection of his effort it is just a fact. He is never in position defensively, he always seems to cover the wrong guy, and he gets walked a lot for a highly skilled player. He needs to put some serious effort into this part of his game. |

We are terrible at missed assignments, covering the wrong guy, leaving the open guy wide open, and catching the late man in on the rush. This is a whole team problem. Phil has his work cut out for him to correct this. |
