We don't, plain and simple, just a theory.
Interesting, I thought with your take, you'd consider luck what I do, an unquantifiable and non noticed specific event or tendency that we don't accurately understand.
So the second biggest factor of consistent winning is something that really doesn't exist? It's just the generic name of that which we can't quantify? - gcomella34
I think luck leads to winning which then gets misunderstood as culture or "clutch".
Just using Pitt as an example, they beat Washington by 1 goal in the second round, in a close series that came down to a few bounces, then got to play the weakest team in the entire playoffs in Ottawa, who only advanced because Boston was down 3 top 4 D men and a top 6 forward by game 7.
Then in the cup finals, was out shot in a game 37-10 (I think) and won due to a bounce, and Nashville hitting a bunch of posts. (they won another game similarly If I recall)
This run of good fortune gets misunderstood as "knowing how to win" or culture. |

no, coaching is coaching
unless you're trying to say that all of this is a part of some mystical culture. then why not just change the word you're using to success and be done with it. |

No, I think the nature of our differences here is one of us has actually sought out the opinions of others and understands the concept of organizational culture theory and one of us doesn't.
You define organizational culture as a talking point, which by the way is accepting or creating your own narrative when there is actually a lot of research out there on the theory. |

And that's all fair, thanks for the explanation.
But here is all I hear.
Kane sucks.
Special teams don't matter.
Culture doesn't matter. |

in your defense you are using the word culture differently than most of the enforcers radio callers do
seems you are referring to it more as structure and vision, and not heart and grit |

On a serious note though, things like that do get lumped into culture when they shouldn't I'll concede that for sure.
Not everyone who uses culture as the catch all does so correctly, but that doesn't undermine the truth of building a strong organizational culture, like the best scouts, coaches, players, etc and getting them to play to their strengths recognize they're part of a bigger machine and perform their role so the machine works the best.
But if you get a bunch of non-talented people together who work really well together, talent will beat them.
What you want is BOTH.
That's my point.

Spot on.
I'm getting my MBA, almost done, so I can understand why JB is saying it the way he is.
Unlike Rivet and Peters who just want everyone to spend as much time in the AHL until "They know their place"
That's a load of horse hockey. |

I think a good example of a good culture is that Brandon Tate play against Tampa.
When the entire team surrounded him on the sidelines.
That's a result of coaching and coming together as a team IMO |

A team wins 3 out of 4 and is feeling pretty good, they then lose the next 7
Good teams, teams that find a way to win or to end a losing streak at 2, or a team that finds a way to stay in the season when they are down their best player on the team (or planet for that matter) isn't done by luck.
Pittsburgh is good because of Crosby and Malkin, what makes them great is when those players are out they just keep going.
The players that replace those two don't have the same talent, they just know what their job is and they do it extremely well.
They learned what it takes to win. Knowing how to win and win on a day to day basis is something that doesn't just happen because you have talent. You have to have the will to go to work day in day out and do things the right way, work hard every shift, every period, every practice, every game
Not everyone has that, not every team has that. That's a winning culture...

How about this, I'll boil it down simply:
Organizational culture is demanding the best at every position on the Sabres organization from the janitor to the players on the ice performing their duties at top level within the league. Nothing less will be accepted and those not fitting will be removed.

It's a shame he (McDermott) almost lost the locker room by benching Tyrod.
I really thought they were on to something there, especially after that Tate play you're talking about. |

Teams rallying together is part of it absolutely.
But they were down a goal and came back in game 7 it MUST be ONLY culture....

are you kidding?
the team rallied on the switch back
the team flat out quit the 8 quarters before the benching and the switch back was the spark the entire team needed
tyrod still sucks by the way |

4 possible QB's for the Bills next year:
Eli
Keenum
Bradford
Bridgewater

Or your bottom six/defense chip in a goal every once in a while, you win some games, and your culture is good

They put up 2 duds, Tyrod was the only one playing against the Jets
The entire team got steam rolled against the Saints.
The San Diego game could have been much different with Tyrod. It's all a what if at this point.
We will know this week if the team bounced back for sure, but the defense certainly did it's job last week against the Chiefs. |
