I don’t think the Sabres are special. And no on3 on here was expecting championships
What we were expecting is to have an uptempo, bubble team...nayb3 in, maybe not.
Now, the Sabres are in 31st place and are playing at a level that will fall short of the Tank years when the organization was TRYING TO LOSE!

We have gone through what 4 years already to find out we are back at square 1 to start unloading players, securing “currency”, so in another 2 years we can be “clean” and ready to begin ascending the ranks. It ain’t 3 years.

Meanwhile, Toronto, Carolina, NJ, Winnipeg ran by them.

Yep, the fans are delusional.

Jesus Christ.

Seriously.

New Jersey just picked 1st. Made moves, got a ton better

Winnipeg just drafted 2nd two years ago, made moves, are maybe the best team in the NHL.

We’re in 31st, after 5 straight previous years of bottom 10 finishes “Were trying to skip making the playoffs”

What?

"at 96.0% the #Sabres currently have the lowest PDO since the stat started being tracked in 2007/2008. "
- Sabresfan-365

the thing i dont like about pdo is goalies can just suck for prolonged periods of times even if they are statistically average over their careers

shooting percentages are more normalized i think, either way the 0 goals on almost 200 shots from the D is pretty insane

And if it wasn't for murray moving removing every ounce of nhl and high-end ahl talent on the team, Nolan probably would have guided the them to a low-20's finish

I don’t doubt this. But shot quality has been dreadful for us

yea im mostly getting at the goal scoring with PDO. Like Risto has created a decent chunk of quality-ish chances, these are eventually going to go in (I hope)

I'd do something not for making the playoffs but to just get some of the younger guys here out of their funk. or to increase the trade value of some of these other players.

Im pro tank but this is just ugly

- Sabresfan-365

Doing something is fine for the sake of development, but not for the sake of winning meaningless games. We won meaningless games in 2016 and now we have Nylander when we might have had Matthews. I swear, we go through this board the same discussion with the Sabres and the Bills every year.

What is PDO
- Buffalo--Sabres

PDO, called SPSV% by the NHL,[4] is the sum of a team's shooting percentage and its save percentage.[7] PDO is usually measured at even strength, and based on the theory that most teams will ultimately regress toward a sum of 100, is often viewed as a proxy for how lucky a team is. According to Wilson, a player or team with a PDO over 102 is "probably not as good as they seem", while a player or team below 98 likely is better than they appear.[5]

Yeah Im more geared at doing it for this not for meaningless wins. Thats why ignoring Brandon Davidson on waivers doesnt bother me.

for instance, ROR is getting trashed by some for his -17, but his goalies have an 84% save percentage while hes on the ice, and he gets tons of d zone starts

its a recipe for a bad +/-, but seeing the bigger picture is difficult for a lot of people

I usually take it then match it up with individuals and their shooting.

its even simpler than that, id look at how many of the PP goals against/empty netters against he was on for.

His goalies being at 84% requires an extra look at where the shots are coming from. If there's an increase in High danger scoring chances when he's on that would mean hes not doing his job well. If it's lower relative to his teammates then the goalie has his head up his ass.

I wouldn’t trash him for his +/-.

I’d trash him for being completely invisible 90% of the time

i think he was one of the worst players on the ice in the first ~10 games

i don't think hes been that bad lately. still nothing to what we'd want him to be though.

He just really isn’t that good.

On a contender he’s a 3rd line center or top 6 wing.

We traded for him like he was a #1 Center.

Unless our PP is clicking, he barely scores.

just an fyi, the oilers finished bottom-10 eight years in a row from 08/09 to 15/16...it would have been nine but they finished 19th in 07/08...

and they're not like buffalo in that the three years in a row they finished 30th, 30th and 29th, they received the first overall pick every time (2010-2012)...

after a 24th place finish in 2012-13 they finished the next two seasons in 28th place both times...in 2014 they selected 3rd overall and in 2015 they selected McJesus first-overall

the sabres haven't had a first overall pick in 30 yrs.

The Oilers were lost until they lucked out on McDavid. He was their 4th 1st overall pick in like the 7th year of their rebuild.

Unless you want to tell me that in 3 years we’re drafting someone better than Eichel, I don’t want to use the Oilers as some gold standard

that's only one part of it though. That same chart at one point said marincin was 10x the player Ristolainen is.

Eichel is in his 3rd year. Hence it's been 3 years since we've tried to win, you don't get to say "we're trying to win" then tank then say "it's been 10 years! WTF?!" how (frank)ing hard is that to understand? Jesus H. Christ.

Side note, i bet it would be great for Eichel if we drafted someone who could actually challenge as the guy on the team(Dahlin)

ROR thinks he is but isn't
