I know this may shock a few people but it is my opinion Benning is seemingly getting better at this GM thing and he was certainly handcuffed by the owner when he first got to Vancouver. He should probably be given another three years to prove his worth.

Mr. Aquilini wouldn't allow a rebuild in 2014 and that severely hurt Benning's ability to do what he should've done, which is do a full-on rebuild. Having said that, Benning was onboard with a re-tool on the fly so he bears 50% of the blame, at least in my opinion.

If they don't extend him, it wouldn't hurt my feelings at all because I still don't care for Benning and to me his blunders have far outweighed his bright spots.

Julien BriseBois (Tampa's assistant GM) would be an excellent choice to start a proper rebuild with, if that's what they are now committed to. I don't care that he'd be a rookie GM, his results in Tampa with Yzerman have been phenomenal and he's a well spoken educated man.

You said frustrating contract which is a common theme for all teams.

Anyway he'll waive to go when Sedins retire or get picked up by Seattle in expansion

And it's stupid to assume that they'll take him. There's a chance, but to bank on it is laughable.

Not every team does. I'm on my phone so I'm not gonna go through all 31. And it made no sense for a bad team to sign a 30+ year old to a 6 year 36 million dollar deal.

Cap space can be used to bailout teams that are poor at cap management, adding assets from them in the process. Any tool to help you should be used to build a winner, cap space is no different.

So every bad long term deal in the NHL is just that easy to move eh?

Best hope is another compliance buyout to bail us out.

- Nucker101

I've seen long term contracts moved and where there is a fit and a will it can be done. You dwell too much on an issue that doesn't exist and gets beaten to death.

LE is serviceable. He cashed out as a UFA which is common. Yes there are good reasons not to have signed him. Does it hurt the Canucks in the present and long term. No not really. So chop it up as not preferable and move on.

How does it not hurt? That cap space could easily be put to better use now, and in the future

I'm just saying give him the time to see if some of his draft picks turn out like we all hope they will. In three years you should see several of his kids in the lineup, if not, he's not done his job.

I said re-sign the Sedins for one year if they can't find anyone else in free agency because I think the kids need another year of insulating or developing.

Yeah the Canucks have the cap space for them regardless of feasibility.

The Sedins will still be here when Erikssons contract is finally up

I understand the want for Benning to return by the fans . I am just looking at his over all tenure and not just the last 6 months.

Our bar is set low here to the point that we are defending a player with one goal in 100 games and saying a 6 million dollar player is having a good year with 5 goals.

We need to raise our expectations and not settle for sub par

The Canucks are not a cap floor team and so your hypothesis wouldn't work in the real world. They do have the cap space to take an Erhoff type deal for cap tapped team. But with so many NTC's out there its not something to bank on.

Outside of his last draft, 2017, I think most of what he's done is poop, garbage, incompetent, however, if they have another good draft I'd like to see where that goes.

But as I said, if they can his ass I'm ok with that too!

I think they would have a good draft with him or without him as long as Brackett is pulling the strings

$29M cap space this summer and $45M in 2019 off season. They can design roster around them. Not likely to happen but on paper there is room cap wise.
