After that $10M UFA you have $19M left for 9 players where ELC's and bargain filler UFA's cover at least 6 guys. Leaving $13M for 3 RFA raises. Plus the cap level is going up by another $5M. So the issue of realistic is subjective.

But again this is not going to happen just saying the cap room is there which you deny because of LE contract.

Forsling for sure...McCann? Jury is out still. Depends on the return for EG to some extent. Tryamkin was due to Willie it had nothing to do with TL or Benning.

It's not just about signing the big time UFA's either. You could've taken on a player like LE from another team and get a good pick/prospect/young roster player to go along with it.

Look at how Carolina got TT from Chicago. I'd take TT + Bickell over LE all day.

Sure if that is available then JB has the cap room to do it. Problem is a lot of those contracts have NTC's to them and waiving to Canucks has not been popular lately. Why they have to over pay free agents. It is the reality of the times.

I don't begrudge your preference. It is real and has merit. Just that in the big picture it won't be an impediment or serious issue with cap. In the meantime, LE is a serviceable quality player to stop gap the rebuild with the new young talent in a support role. Yes his contract is not good just the reality of things.

Yes I agree Mike Gillis's drafting was abysmal, in six drafts he produced two players, pathetic really. It's too early to tell if Benning's drafting will be good or not but it is most certainly better than Gillis's.

As for the teams you mentioned, you're damn right you don't need to draft top six to find good players, BUT, their success was in large part FROM drafting players at the top of the draft.

Gillis set us back many years after inheriting most of his talent. Bright side is a few horrible seasons will restock us for the next push.

Funny a regular like Nucker understood but hey if you're unfamiliar about the Canucks:

Examples are:

RFA's Markus Granlund, and Sven Baertschi up for a raise.

With Derrick Pouliot and Jake Virtainan modest bumps.

ELC's that could be added are Adam Gaudette, Elias Pettersson & Goldobin.

Free agent stop gaps to sign could be Dowd, Stecher or type from other teams.

Totally upset their team chemistry. Melnyk didn't want to pay Turris and Duchene is two years younger and signed for a couple more years. Their owner (frank)s with the team over there as much as ours does here.
