I don't think it's like that. They've got guys playing above what they're capable of and guys being paid way more than they are worth. - Sabresfan-365
The money is a issue
but money aside do you ever see this team competing for the Stanley Cup ? |

obviously not, but not because it has a bad core, because at the moment it has no core.
Edit: incomplete core |

what about it?
that core along with drury and briere succeeded hasek/peca and preceded the tank - Michael Pachla
Roy , Tim ,vanek ,soup ,Miller was the new core
Before that it was Danny ,Drury , Jay McKee, JP Dumont, Mike Grier ,

These "players "are the not the right ones
I don't want a roster full of Medicore ones and everyone on this team is that besides Jack - GERBE!!!75PTS
The problem, imo, is that you think the Sabres have a core right now.
I believe there are 4 pieces:
Your #1C, #2C, #2D and #1W
Everyone else is a moving piece. It sounds like that #1 W is gone. So We'll have 3 openings in the core. 2 Forwards and a dman. The core is there in a small form, but not in its complete form |

most contending cores are 6 or 7 guys. I really only identify Jack, ROR and to a lesser extent Risto as core pieces.
Not quick to get rid of those last two cause I wanna see what theyd look like as part of a full core not this half assed mish mash of guys some idiot liked in ottawa. |

it's evolving, just like that core you mentioned...2003-07 and beyond was a dramatic swing from what they were doing prior, just like the tank was a dramatic departure from 2007-12 |

You're kidding right? so much is expected of him to solve the defensive troubles this team has. - Sabresfan-365
Then, what's his ceiling? I've heard nobody say that he has the potential to be a top pair, but many seem to think he'll be some sort of savior. That doesn't make much sense. "Gee, I can't wait till that potential #4 guy makes us a contender," said no one. |

That's kind of my point. He'll be a great add because he's a great skater/puck mover and a top 4 guy which probably makes him our 2nd best d-man, but hes not going to save the franchise. not on his own and certainly not in his first year. |

that late 90's team was the most beloved since the French connection with the possible exception of the Lafontaine/mogilny teams...
darcy tore it down and ended up building a team that was made for the "new nhl"...may have helped that the league was running the team while he was doing so and he knew what direction this whole thing was headed

I understand that you might have only those guys in your core but the Sabres obviously have a different mindset and I'm not liking the direction that it's going into we might think kyle is obviously not in the core but they might think hey he is in the core etc |

Has anyone hyped him as a #1 dman? I always assumed he would be a second pair guy to lock down a pair behind Risto and ?? |

We need to get Dahlin or one of the other Dman at the very top of this draft. Virtually every contender has a franchise Dman and we'll never afford to trade for one. I like seeing the team come together and put up some wins, but we need to stay at the bottom for the rest of this season. Our defense will only marginally get better without a legit #1. |

That's what i'm saying. No one has hyped him as a top pair, but yet, people hype him as some sort of solution to our defensive problems. He'll help, but we need a lot more. We need a #1 Dman or we're just spinning our wheels. |

I really hope so, but this year has been brutal for him outside of 2-3 games.
He was bumped down to the 3rd line.
As a top 10 pick he should be a PPG player in the AHL, no excuses - sbroads24
Puljujarvi has 33pts in 49games over parts of 2 AHL seasons
Let’s wait till the end of this year to judge Nylander

And that’s still much better than Nylander.
Plus JP has gone back and forth, and never really established himself there.
Nylander has been there for 80 games now |
