Regression? Bad drafting Gillis. Torts. Benning Trev first year draft copy LA, heavy, then Pitt changed game to speed. Tryamkin, one reason was Willie D, see it in Johnson in Pitt b4 Sullivan took over. Or Boucher OTT. Wasted 3 flipping years with WD.

Dahlin is a prospect who couldn’t have emerged from the SHL or national programs 20 years ago. Says Hedberg: “After Peter Forsberg, there was a period of 10 years or so when we produced very few players in Sweden — Henrik Lundqvist, Henrik Zetterberg, the Sedins, but really very few. We didn’t develop the skill players because of the game that was played here… [was] very conservative, so negative; no risks, no speed, safe, possession hockey without imagination or creativity.

“Teams played a 1-3-1 system, defence first. It would get some results internationally because it’s so hard to play against, but it was terrible for development. If Rasmus Dahlin came along then, there was no way that he would have been allowed to play the game you see him play now. No way he’d be encouraged to be so aggressive with the puck. Eventually the Swedish hockey federation came to the conclusion in the late-90s and early-2000s that we had to rethink the way the game is played. We had to let them play and not hold them back.”

I don't think thats true at all - for example, over his career, Sven has a point more than Namestnikov in the exact same amount of games and he's on TBs top line, currently the best team in the league and a hell of a lot better than the Canucks the past few years.

I don't get the Sven hate, or willingness to replace him? He was on pace for 50 points before the injury, thats pretty close to 1st line production, it's definitely 2nd. Each year Sven has improved with the increased responsibility/pressure and he's stepped up to the challenge. Plus he's 25, cheap and realistically it's only his 3rd full year in the league. I just don't think he's that easily replaceable.

Sven is also defensively sound. He a good player... anyone would be happy with pulling a player like him out of the 2nd round which was what we traded for him I think. I'm all for improving his/any spot on the #1 line always but he's done all that can be asked from him since he's not an elite player. I like him. Would keep him over similar aged players on the team like Granlund if it came down to it.

You don't like retooling on the fly?

The rebuild would be half over if they did it properly. Instead were left with this soup Kitchen. Hopefully this fully commit to it between now and the deadline.

Yup, everyone just has to complain about something. Baertschi is a top 6 player who still has some upside

Sven is a decent player to have on the club but there are always intangibles with a player that is typically 2-3 liners. He's good enough to play on most teams 2nd line when he is on...but he is also very streaky and soft which is why he ends up with 3rd line minutes sometimes. It is what it is with players like Sven...they will get you 50 pts the odd year but the consistency levels can be very low some other seasons. Plus he's injury-prone. Risk/reward.
