As usual, you’re spot on. But I will go that extra step for you: I think they are at times incompetent at development.
Even in the AHL they believe in (usually small) roles for their prospects and imposing self-made artificial ceilings that limit potential. We see it all the time. They do not know how to develop skill because they have a clinical obsession with safe, bland, mediocre players. It’s a philosophy for them. It is one of the most frustrating issues I have with this organization. They can hang their hat on their drafting and youth movement, but I question if they can actually develop them. Sue me. - Mononoke

From the twit: 28% chance of making the playoffs. 56% chance of missing playoffs AND not having a top 5 pick. - SimmerDown17
How is 28% a playoff bubble team half way through the season. So this team has actually under performed expectations. |

LA (and others recently) are proof that you need to find talent in the draft and develop it to be competitive. Calling it proof that of what Hextall is doing with the Flyers is a little revisionist history. I don't remember them drafting and developing Carter, Williams, Richards, Gagne, Mitchell, and Greene. They were a team that won with a veteran core, not a bunch of guys seasoned to the max in the AHL.
Pearson and Toffoli were both 21 when they won their second cup (skilled rookies added to an established core ) and they spent time in the AHL, but they came from junior hockey.
The two concepts just arent the same. I think Hextall wants to make the team play like the Kings in a lot of ways, and he certainly understands the value of drafting...but I find it impossible to look at both situations and say that is the path the Flyers are on. If that is the case you can argue pretty much every team in the NHL is on that "path" - YuenglingJagr
Who made up that veteran core? Kopitar, Brown, Doughty. Where did they get them from? The draft. That is exactly what Hextall is doing. To say that the two concepts aren't the same is simply false. Player development is so fluid and so different from player to player, that you can look at any two teams that have the same philosophy and find variances. It's the nature of the game.
It's so similar it's funny. For many years, fans in LA were calling for Lombardi's head on message boards as they ran out of patience. Once the team got to the point where the exact weaknesses were identified is when Lombardi then used trades and free agency to supplement the roster.

That to me is as bad as the Forsberg deal. yuck!
Simmonds for Patches straight up I a may be able to get behind, although our "soft" quotient goes up exponentially. |

Something you can't do. - MJL
you do it for me
Again insinuates that they don't know what they're doing. As if developing Lindblom for a top 9 scoring line role and giving him AHL time is the wrong thing to do. Who determines if they're overcooked? You? This also insinuates that the Flyers main goal is to save face and are more worried about the optics of moves rather than the actual results. Obviously not the case yet it doesn't stop you from posting that it is. - MJL
me and a ton of other people that watch him and realize how ready he is. It has nothing to do with saving face. What the Flyers care about is that a prospect "busts" it just results in the fans saying it happened because he wasn't ready
You can have an opinion all you want. Doesn't mean that Hextall is wrong and you're right. What I'm actually saying and I'll repeat is that I don't know if Lindblom is ready or not and because of that, I'll defer to the experts. What evidence can you provide that calling up Lindblom now will make him the better player in the long run. No need for you to answer that because you can't. You can watch a player all you want, still just a random fans opinion just like mine. - MJL
No I can't and that is my point. I don't think AHL or NHL has as much of a long term difference as people make it seem. Good players will be good players. Patrick is clearly overmatched right now, but is that going to ruin his development? Sean Couturier...the guy who had his offensive development ruined by coming to the NHL too early, right? Did the extra NHL time clear up Ghost's "issues"?
Let's not forget the actual proof we have of Scott Laughton coming to the NHL and then going back to the AHL once it was deemed necessary. Ruined?
The Flyers should not be putting the needs of the current team before the needs of any young players development. That is more important than making the Flyers a better playoff bubble team now. - MJL
They aren't exclusive. The current state of the Flyers would leave them working in parallel actually. Other NHL ready prospects are playing in the NHL, so I guess they aren't developing? AHL isn't the only place that happens. |

Pittsburgh, defending champ and perennial playoff team, has a 19% chance right now... but keep being you.
The solace in things is if the Flyers did turn that 28% into a reality you'll be gone like a fart in the wind. |

If the Canes can beat the Penguins tonight, they're damn near dead. Real hard to gain ground when you're 3 points back of a team that has games in hand on you. |

Kopitar wasn't drafted by Lombardi actually
Lol yes all teams draft and develop players with certain variances. Saying there were players on the team that were drafted and developed proves what Ron Hextall is doing now is the same is asinine. The team was loaded with vets acquired through FA and trades. Not to mention none of it has anything to do with Lindblom spending a couple extra months in the AHL or not
