To be fair, I don't remember hearing a lick about the WJC until this current decade. I think it's fair to say that junior/collegiate hockey has gained a lot more popularity in the past several years, especially in America.

When I was a senior in high school and the sectional(regional based on school size I don't know if they have those in Canada) championships were held at the arena and there were a good 7,000 people(most of the lower bowl), it was also the same day and time as the US-Canada men's gold medal game in Salt Lake City.
