Thought i read somewhere the contract was not insured. i cant see a scenario where the players ever give up guaranteed contracts, especially in a gate driven league. - Sabresfan-365
That's why I think it'll be a full-season lockout. I can see a scenario where owners give the players the ability to renegotiate their contracts to avoid getting cut, or if a player drastically over performs, the team either has to pay more or release that player to the open market where they cam cash in big time |

Right. I can basically get my thoughts around what you're saying here. But in the case of the Leafs with Horton. When next October comes around he'll be roughly 18 months off the ice, are we to believe he's not healed from whatever injury he had sustained in all that time? The league says that a player needs to come off LTIR, but it seems as though Toronto will want him to stay on it until the end of his contract, another two full seasons. They want his 5.3M per year cap space going towards Matthews, Marner, Nylander, etc...
So if Horton's 5.3M stays on LTIR for the next two seasons after this one, and that money goes towards other players next contracts, that really seems like salary cap circumvention, does it not? That'd be like us putting Moulson on LTIR for the next two years and getting his cap hit of 5M back to spend elsewhere. - sskkoo1
It's shady, no question. Not specifically with Horton, I have no clue if he could ever play in the NHL again. Hossa basically retired, without penalizing the Hawks, and pockets his salary while doing it. Legit or not, it looks bad.
As I pointed out though, it's not as simple as freeing the Leafs to use his 5.5m and much of it will be 'consumed' by ELC bonuses from this season rolling over. There's significant downside, and it's part of the reason the Sabres never put Cody McCormick on LTIR.
LTIR moves should be reviewed by a league physician. That seems like common sense...maybe in the next CBA. |

Owners would never let that happen, 2/3 of this league relies on their ability to get their top players under sweetheart deals. Otherwise they stay in a constant state of turmoil no matter how well they draft and develop
Guaranteed contracts are bad, unless you're the guys getting them. then you do everything you can to protect that and when the league you play for relies heavily on ticket sales, you have just enough leverage to make this a reality. |

I think it could work if contracts are drafted like this:
Player X signs a contract with team Y
The contract is guaranteed for that amount if X scores between 40-60 points.
If it's under 40 points, Y can either ask the player to renegotiate or they can cut the player.
If it's over 60 points, X can ask for more money or Y has to let them go |

But then you get all those arguments about intangibles and advanced stats and "can't just read the stat sheet".
Just way too much and never really sustainable |

Well in my scenario, the range of achievement (points, intangibles, useage) would all be agreed upon by both parties before the contract was signed. So ownership could still give favorable parameters to players to get them to sign, or players could sign low and cash in with a big season.
It would increase league turnover by a lot which would be fun for fans |

Any word on Risto?
That was barely a minor penalty IMO - Stripes77
Completely agree. His shoulder caught Koivu across the chin, but he didn't target. Clean, if sightly late, check. |

Kane for RNH, do it yesterday
Move Ror to wing or trade him south for D
Call up the 1.4 p/pg player to create unheard of magic with Eichel

Id honestly rather a D prospect or draft pick (1st rounder). RNH isnt the shut down guy people think he is (at least not in recent times) and he's not an overly great scorer. |

Right and his arms hit chest before shoulder and chin met
The only reason he was cut was Koivo's own stick hit himself |

Right. I'm not trying to bash the Leafs or Horton, I just used them as an example because the Leafs are at the cap ceiling and have 4 guys on LTIR.
I know we let McCormick's contract ride out, but his deal was only 1.5M and we had more than enough cap space to absorb it. The Leafs on the other hand are at zero cap space and with 4 guys on LTIR, so they are way over the cap ceiling if any of those guys come back.
So, long term, it seems like they're planning on not having any of those guys back, and to have a guy like Horton, who has a good size cap hit, be ridden out for upwards of 3 years, it just seems real fishy. |

Koivu was cut, so instead of using their discretion, they automatically assessed 5 and a game. I really hate that.
No player safety news since the 3rd.
They make it a pain in the ass to find. You have to click on sections, news, then scroll all the way to the bottom and click player safety.

We want skill and SPEED down the middle. If RNH is available you grab him by the p***y.
I'm automatically attracted to skill, I just start watching it. It's like a magnet |

Have you seen the refs make the minor call, then have the refs change it to a major, like phil mentioned in the press conference. I thought phil said he had never had that happen before? |
