AHL, needs to learn the small ice. Come on Dahlen! |

After seeing OJ I can see him playing here next year. Ryan Biech wrote a good article on him yesterday about how subtle his game in and how he runs a lot of interference on other teams. He complimented him on how well he dangles the blue line.
He does seem to be a Salo /Tanev type guy who quietly does things right. - VANTEL

That one the other night for Tanev was right on par with Salo's luck. |

I am a fan of OJ. Watched him closely here at Mem Cup a few years back and was top 3 on that Knights club. All I know is that when CLB took Dubois they fooked up that draft a bit and then Puljujarvi fell to EDM. Actually..I had it on pretty good authority from the scouts at Mem Cup that EDM wanted OJ. |

More like Canuck luck.
I have never seen a team have so many broken faces in such a short period of time like this.
4 in 3 seasons, Sutter, Hamhuis, Baertschi and Tanev.
Eventually, the luck has to start going Canucks way, maybe this summer at the ping-pong tournament(lottery). |

I always said that draft that Benning looked pissed when selecting OJ, like he expected Edmonton to take him instead of JP. You could tell that OJ wasn't his first or even second choice and that Columbus really went off the board with that pick. |

I'm all for Dahlen coming to Utica this year but i don't get this idea that European kids have to learn how to play on a smaller ice surface. What exactly do you mean?
From my experience playing on both sizes the difference was conditioning. I grew up playing on Olympic size ice and we could always out skate other teams but in terms of re-learning the game, that was never an issue. The difference i hear sometimes is there's not as much time in the NHL, but I hear NA and Europe players say that, they're referring to the pace of the game. Making decisions faster with the puck.
In the past few years, Barkov, Lindholm, Ristolainen, Wennberg, Aho to name a few have successfully made the jump from EU to NA ice. I guess i'm more interested in knowing what you think they need to learn thats so different? Do you mean the dump and chase style, or physical differences between the two?
HOWEVER, in Dahlens case, given the fact that theres no need to rush him, i think its a great idea to send him to Utica and try to help them out. |

Agree. Pretty sure Benning wanted PLD but it is what it is. Two close friends of the family are top scouts for London and Kelowna so I was getting some juicy info here and there. lol Juolevi's teammates were giving him a pretty hard time as well about possibly getting picked by EDM... |

GM/Scouting staff need to be prepared for those things No excuse. Was there not an option to trade down? Possibly to pick Mikhail Sergachyov???
He wasn't prepared imo. |

When CLB took PLD at 3 it threw a wrench into basically the whole top 10 picks. Lots of GM's had to scramble after that...Not sure I would hang that one on JB.
Lots on here loved Sergachev it just wasn't to be. |

No Franson..... we passed. Everyone else did to. Stupid move by Benning.
So we get pylons like Dowd to cover injuries but actual players to cover possible trades, if only until the year's end.... nah.
Unless he is planning on keeping Guddy.

i don't think this staff ever seriously considered trading down in the first round in any of their drafts.
they may have wanted PLD but i think OJ was the next guy on their list when they picked.
i think it would be ludicrous for any management group not to run several simulations to figure out what they would do given several situations. i refuse to believe that no one said, "hey, what if PLD gets picked before us?" |

Less room to skate/stickhandle is what I understand to be the big difference with big ice, all your angles and lanes tighten up. Yeah for sure all players have to learn there's less time to make decisions and to simplfy their plays and the physicality. I think you highlighted a bunch of elite draftpicks that didn't need the adjustment and could handle making them at the NHL, which Dahlen may well be at this point.
I guess my point was to stress developing players in developmental leagues, as I have all year. Timra is a team that I would consider a developmental league, anything below the NHL where you have to play with men and has a decent skill level is really, but as you mentioned it mostly has to do with not rushing him. AHL IMO is a very high end developmental league where the coaching, physicality and preparation are very similar. To me it would be a significant move up from Timra, stepping stone if you will, I err on the side of caution though as I really don't see a lot of reason to bring him into the NHL. |
