Well... the islanders traded Luongo and drafted Dipietro as their starter... next season lets trade demko and play Dipietro as our NHL starter.
- Pres.cup

lol we could easily pick up the remainder of Dipetro's 17 year contract!!

I forgot it was a 2 yr not a 1 yr for nilson. Might be hard to move then without it being part of a bigger trade

Such a small asset... may not get anything. Send him down if Demko is on fire in the preseason...

How do you think that's the best thing for his development?
- Bullfrog77

a question with a question eh?? ok

I'm saying - AHL 2 years
Backup next year
perhaps starter the year after

I think thats pretty common, standard development for a goalie.

The only other option is going from the AHL to the NHL and becoming a starter immediately. And thats supposed to be better for his development? Even if he spent his 3 rd year in the AHL, joined the team in 2019, is he then gifted the starting job or is he the backup?

Bachman got called up due to injury.... demko wasnt the starter to start the season, just to finish. So 1.5 years.
Call him up after half a season next year unless he forces his way onto the team.... or are you a develop in the nhl league type of guy?

- Pres.cup

Bachman had lost the starter position before he got called up.

call him up and do what with Nilsson or Markstrom?

Nothing wrong with that. I'm fairly sure it was meant as a contingency in case Demko is not ready to be a backup next year. Pretty simple either trade him for whatever you can get or send him to the minors.

I already answered what I thought was better for his development. If the canucks were even a league average team...with even average ability to play in their own zone , you could make a case for him being a backup. But this team has proven three years in a row now that defensively they are about as bad as a team can be. So explain to me why you think it's best for demko to stop playing hockey , come warm the bench and watch his mentor markstrom leak goals like a civ? And on those rare occasions he gets into a game on the backside of a double header he gets not only the notoriously useless defence to play behind....but now a worn out overtired , disinterested useless defense. Sorry...i just don't see any logical reason to bring demko into this poop show next year. I'm not advocating gifting demko anything. I'm more interested in overrippening prospects , not giving a backup position to a guy that's yet to play one nhl minute.

I think Demko starts in Utica next year unless he blows marky and nilson out of the water. BUt i think they find a way to move Nilson next year and bring demko up mid way through.

So one year as a starter, let him start the year as the undisputed started in Utica and if he forces his way up, waive or trade Nilsson.
- Pres.cup

Frankly, he's doing well lately and with a .927% deserves maybe a start or two this year, I just think It should be Nilsson and Markstrom until Demko is ready for 30 games at the NHL. So maybe 10 NHL starts next year, 30 in Utica? The following year he becomes backup full time. It's not normal circumstances where the guy ahead of you is a vet who is going to play 50-60 games. It's a fragile pair of backups, no need to rush Demko into the mix.

Almost 75% of all the current starting goalies began as backups and averaged 2.2 years in the AHL before coming up. Do you think they all just walked into ideal situations with great defence and excellent back checking forwards to shelter them? He's not a child, at some point he gotta come up and play, we cant hide him down there until everything is rainbows. If by your logic we have to keep all of our prospects in Utica until its the right time then why is Boeser playing this year, and why was Horvat thrown into the sh&t show the year before? At some point you gotta trust that our prospects are ready and they help us get better.

If Gaudette comes in for the last 8-9 games this year like Boeser did last season I could see Demko coming in for a few starts...as long as it doesn't hurt what Utica is trying to accomplish.

I guess. I'm not really in favor of gaudette going straight to the NHL, but if that what it takes to get him to sign I'm ok with it.

Interesting you bring up the two success stories, but can we also talk about how that's gone for Virtanen, Hutton and Stecher? because their being in the NHL is making them better or the Canucks IMO.

Lots of time to drive the price up, stay patient jimbo. Contenders could run into all kinds of injury problems then desperation sets in.
