Yeah it sucks. I just don't think the Sabres are that far away. A few smart moves and the team looks a lot better. There's the record in 1 goal games and such. I just don't believe it's that bad, and I'm sure I'll be lambasted by 10 people for that opinion.
- jcragcrumple

you bring in kane, bogo, scandella, lehner, ror, okposo (32 mil per year)

and you are no better than before those additions

that's very telling considering the % of your cap those 6 players eat up

ROR im 50/50 on, but he could bring back a nice return. Id add risto to that list as well
- Sabresfan-365

I think risto is fine as a second pair, so I left him off the list because we are so bad on D

after saying that, if you pick number 1 overall, I'd throw risto out there this offseason and see what nibbles you get

okposo,o'reilly, bogosian and lehner....trade them all.
prolly eating a ton of money on okposo, but no reason the rest can't be traded for prospects and picks.
start from ground zero.

kessel, phaneuf, clarkson all got moved one way or another .......a shrewd, smart GM should be able to figure a way out of that mess in Buffalo.

Ullmark, Risto, Eichel .......thats all there is to start building on.

Like ROR, I think Risto brings you a nice return, could open up some chances to get a better d-man (with a 1st rounder or prospects). Or package him for someone like Trouba

2 picks #2 overall
a 6th overall pick that hasn't cracked the big club

ror
kane
scandella
okposo
lehner
bogo

many assets moved to obtain those players

and the big club is no better off in year 3 then they were when they drafted eichel

it is a failure at this point of epic proportions

Who did we pick 6th?

IMO If you move Risto, you’d better be damn sure you’re getting the best game pay in the deal coming back. More than not Risto is the best piece on either side.

Depends who you ask. He's a tire fire defensively and so is the rest of the d-core. Best way at fixing that is picks/prospects, Risto could probably get us that. Or you add prospects to risto and swing for the fences to land a legit top pair guy.

Picks and prospects and you just lost that deal to n a bad way.

What’s to say if you swing for Trumba he’s going to be and better than Risto. Trumba has by far the better defensive core around him by a mile.

No, you didn't. Value is value. If the whole argument is that risto needs less minutes and better players around him, how exactly do they achieve that? Picks?.....Prospects? see where im going with this.

We know Trouba is better because relative to his "by far better players around him" hes had better numbers for long period of time. Ristolainen, even through context, has worse defensive numbers.

I am in the keep ROR club. I think ROR is a solid #2 center, albeit an expensive one. The guy perennially plays for Team Canada. Babcock played ROR over Giroux in last year's World Cup of Hockey. Plus nobody on this team can win a faceoff, including Jack. My core moving forward:

Jack, ROR, Risto, Ulmark, Guhle, Mitts

You can trade everyone else and I wouldn't be upset.

17.5 mil for 2 centers is a big pill to swallow for an average at best second line

crosby and geno cost 18.2 mil per

The last thing this team needs is more picks and prospects. It’s been picks and prospects for 10 years now. Enough is enough.

Risto is a mess because every other game he’s paired with a different guy. You would be too.

I know if the guy I work with on a Saturday takes off, I’m out of rhythm all night long. He’s consistently played with garbage partners.

It hasn't though, it's been "okay we've waited 6 months thats long enough lets take all our assets and trade for fringe players".

Risto is a mess defensively because he's an offensive guy. The real issue he's not scoring enough to make up for that.
