OC experience for the very dynamic Cleveland Browns, KC Chiefs, Miami dolphins and a college team that used a pro corner as their QB all year.

What’s not to like with that hire??

Ppl like Pouliot, but I think he’s meh

If his plan really was to “stealth tank” then whoever we get in this draft will help

Keeping the kids in Rochester this year doesn’t help the Sabres NOW,
but could very well benefit us in the future

I do think winning in Rochester matters,
and obviously developing players correctly will be a major help

Idk how we can really evaluate Botts year though? He just got here man

- jdfitz77

I like Pouliot for a couple reasons:

Botts bought low on him
He adds some speed
His goals are huge
He could potentially land a 2nd or 3rd

As for the goals, imagine if a couple of girgs, larsson, nolan, josefson, Moulson, or griffith had a surprise 20 goal pace this year. Pouliot and Pominville are currently the only bottom 6 guys who are have decent goal scoring seasons.

The Sabres would be in a lot better shape if a couple of the other guys could find the net without Eichel. Pouliot has done that this year, sometimes spectacularly.

I give Botterill a lot of credit for that move. I also think Wilson and Beaulieu were a waste of a 5th and a 3rd. I honestly have no opinion of him as GM, and I won't until he makes his first splashy move

I'm not sure you can learn anything about a coach who works for the Browns. Things have been so bad for so long that it's impossible to evaluate imo

Pouliot is that Jamie mcginn type that us as fans think he's worth more to a playoff team etc but a 3rd or 4th sounds right

McGinn got fat on the PP though. Pouliot can lead a rush

What I'm saying everyone thought he land a easy 2nd with his goals that year including me

We might have to wait for players to get moved at the deadline to see what his true value is could be a 2nd if something crazy happen or just a 4 or 5th

Not to pick on you specifically, because that epic Scott Wilson discussion a while back I have heard multiple people express disappointment on the 5th for him.
Really though?

A quick search shows that since 1983, fully 34 years of drafts, there have been less than 15 notable players picked in rounds 5 and thereafter. That’s one every other year roughly.
(guessing about 20 teams average picking each year, making average of 5 rounds = 100 selections total x 34 years = 3,400 total player selection during that span in rounds 5+)
Those odds are crazy low to the point it is a joke to even discuss.
But, hey whatever.
And lastly, sinc3 Scott has been watching from the stands, they have played one good game...CLEARLY TIME TO BRING BACK SCOTT WILSON!!! (That was a joke guys)

Too bad, this was the game I was waiting for this weekend.
I’m still hoping the Saints can get it on track and make a game of it.
Vikings D looking solid.

Last 5th rounders
Andrew Shaw -2011
Kerfoot C miller , hellebuyck -2012
Butcher-2013
Bjork-2014
Troy Terry -2015

And who did we draft 5th ? Will Borgen and Ryan Miller

And what superstar went in the 5th ? Jamie Benn

I usually like 5th round picks for those no risk and reward players

Thank you, Exactly.
I like that draft strategy as well, no doubt.
No Risk = pick is of very nominal value such that a bust picked at that point doesn’t matter.
They can make those same selections in Round 4, 6, 7.
To claim it is some huge waste and disappointment is just crazy.
95% of picks made in round 5 or more have a ceiling of a 4th liner OR WORSE.
Funny how JBotts offered a 5 th for a guy who played on the 4th line, incredible vision, mind blowing coincidence I would say. He must have inside info.

He was a 17 overall once upon a time.

Picks are worth less than prospects.

Way the vikes defense is playing I bet they make Brady look old, and the pats don’t look good when Brady looks old.

Shows the value of having a top notch scouting staff.
Yes, they will make bad selection, just less of them.

That said, teams should hit on the vast majority of their 1st rounders.
At 17th, I would guess a D-man picked there should amount to a 4th or 5th...if lucky a 3.
He is a 7th at best...a poor man’s Bogo.

A good prospect, yeah definitely.

But if the offers coming in are mid first rounders or b level guys with not much ceiling, not something to consider

I think it's the other way around. We're talking about guys who have just barely become adults. Most of the picking after round 1 is just a guessing game.

The difference between a good and great scouting staff might just be hitting on 2 out of 20 2nd to 7th rounders instead of 1 out 20.

I couldn't tell you whether the dallas scouting staff is good or not, all i know is they found two core players with 5th round picks and that's damn impressive.

someone created a chart that showed over the last decade the sabres had the most 2nd to 7th rounders play at least 100 or so games in the nhl. That's all well and good but you'd probably prefer 1 jamie benn and 6 busts instead of 5 marcus foligno's

I think that’s just the scouting staff’s equivalent of PDO.
