Nelson joined the Sabres for practice on Wednesday because Nathan Beaulieu is out with an illness. He has posted 11 points and a plus-11 rating in 37 games with the Americans this season.

So yea offer low.

If the price is too high you go somewhere else. Hell the Leafs have 3 rentals of their own they can sell.

You have maybe 5-8 teams looking for that upgrade at forward and 15 rental players to choose from.

Not exactly IMO.
If one of those teams arms themselves with JVR rather than Kane, it puts additional pressure on the remaining teams to arm themselves as well just to presumptively “stay even” with said team.
An arms race with limited arms and multiple suitors actually drives the price tag higher.

Nobody cares about the baggage you say Kane comes with, it's about winning games and advancing to the playoffs. If the Sabres didn't have so many bad contracts,Kane would not be traded he would be resigned.

I'm expecting the Kane return to be about standard for a rental, 1st rd pick and a prospect. plus a conditional pick is resigned.

I’m no GM, nor am I in the room with one.
However, the pundits are all saying Kane is at the top of the list and he has a unique skill set that is ideal for playoff hockey. The other prospects at this point do not offer that apparently...so the number of total rentals isn’t really a “comparable” list...hence the real supply is low. Only need two in pursuit ... hearing there are multiple suitors.

That can all change in a moments notice though, so the art is trying to time the market.

I assume JBotts is feeling that he is in the drivers seat based on his real conversations with multiple GMs, hence why the price we hear is going up.
Nothing else makes sense.

You also have guys like Hoffamn from Ottawa and Pacioretty rumored to be available with term left.

There is going to be a lot available IMO.

It will hopefully be an interesting trade deadline this year, because they all have sucked recently.

That return you mention is below the latest rumored asking price, however it is more than was thought to be the value just 6 weeks ago when it was set at a player or a pick...not the 3 you mentioned here.

I am as surprised at the asking price myself, not sure I would pay it myself...but if the price keeps going up that must tell you something about the supply and demand specific to Kane.

I agree that if he pulls it off, he is the king of recent GMs we have seen here.
