What is the rule here.... if he is picked up on re-entry waivers (Is that even still a thing?) how does that effect who pays his contact? - Beatle_john
There's no more re-entry waivers. You pay 100% of whatever contract is remaining of a waiver claimed player.

Bowman is a professional and been in the front office for years. He obviously put quite a bit of thought into that offer and thought it made at least a little bit of sense for the Canucks. He knows what he's doing. - Nucker101

Carey Price has a brutal deal, Lucic, Ladd but yes I tend to agree it is the worst. - mauryballstein
People are so quick to judge, most of these deals aren't even halfway done. I doubt any poster here could negotiate better contracts than professional GM's who have been in the business for years.
What's next? We're gonna criticize a firefighter for not being quick enough to save lives and put out a fire?

If Chicago has Sikura signed - I wonder if MDZ would get it done? Otherwise it would have to be a 2nd, which they don't have. - Brooks_Light
Is MDZ even worth a 2nd?
Could be a 2nd next season or a 3rd this year would work too. |

To Chi
Tanev
To Van
Seabrook
Forsling - classic321
Add Erikkson and we have a deal.

So what was the benefit then of not picking him up on the way down. Were they hoping they could trade a 7th rounder for a percentage of Chicago retaining contact salary?
Seems risky to allow all other teams to pass. |

He hasn't been placed on waivers yet. But hypothetically, a GM that wants him could let him clear waivers first and then call Chicago up and ask them to retain salary or take on a bad contract in return and make a trade instead.
Another factor is the 50 contract limit, some teams are already at 50 signed players so they can't claim a player. It's why some players go unclaimed on waivers and then get traded for something later. |

I would hope so but who fawking knows anymore - there's so many weird deals that start happening around this time leading up to the TDL. I think deals can be a little more desperate (overpaid) than logical.
We know that MDZ is a minute muncher (20+ per night), can play against top lines, moves the puck fairly well, can play in all situations, hits way more than i ever thought and puts up a few points. I think a second is fair, possibly a conditional third? |

The burrows deal is prime example of a weird deal. |

Duchene deal was weird to me.
Ottawa gave up essentially two 1st's and a 2nd for the difference between duchene and Turris.

in the summer, that would have been a bergevin level bad deal for the nucks.
that deal now is getting into below chiarelli level bad. |

Benning was right to turn it down. Another sign that he's much smarter than the media/fans will give him credit for. |

yeah - the sens paid those picks to avoid losing turris for nothing.
instead, they'll lose duchene for nothing next year and will still be out the picks. |

i can't come here and honestly say he's a bottom 5 gm anymore.
middle of the pack. seems to be learning on the job. if aquillini would give him a full re-build mandate for 2 years, he could do well. |

He's top 10 for me. I myself used to ridicule him, but when I took the time to fairly compare him to his rival GM's and only look at the long-term picture, he comes out looking pretty strong.
Pettersson, Boeser, Horvat is a damn nice top 3 forward group. Then you add in:
Gaudette - leading NCAA scorer and strong 2 way player
Lind - top 10 CHL scorer
Gadjovich - team Canada WJHC
Dahlen - dominating the Swedish AHL
Virtanen - can be a Kreider type.
Demko's stats are eerily similar to Schneider's, going back to college.
Juolevi is putting up points in Finland's top league as a 19 year old.
Just need another solid draft in 2018 and things are looking up. |

If bowman called benning and really did offer Seabrook and forsling for Tanev and a 3rd, i hope that not only did Benning rudely hang up on him, but let out a huge fart into the speaker before doing so. |

i think there will always be a what if with him. the win now and rebuild mandate is slowing things down.
i doubt he's given the leash to see the longer rebuild pan out. |

Whoa nelly,
Pettersson - couldn't even crack the Swedish Olympic team...bust
Virtanen - 4th line player...bust
Lind - cut from team Canada...cut
Gadjovich - team Canada WJHC bench warmer
Dahlen - dominating the Swedish AHL worse league than the ECHL |
