My son is 28, in the range of many posters here.
His Mom and I divorced when he was about 7.
While I paid $2,400 a month (starting in 1994) in child support for him and his brother, they never had a lot growing up.
He managed to go to NYS Colleges (Fredonia, then UB) and he joined ROTC to help foot his portion of college. He studied hard and earned an opportunity to go to US Army Flight School to learn how to fly Blackhawk helicopters...his dream.
Finished 3rd in class of 100...by studying, doing all the extra work, and focused on being a leader....they Saw it in him.
His 1st 3 years out of college he worked as a Security Guard at a bank, moved up to Supervisor, then came inside for Security planning.
He applied and succesfully tested out to train to become an Air Traffic Controller...tough 5 month training program with about a 33 -40% graduation rate, finished 2nd out of 65 who started. He chose to go to the Wash DC area for further training ... about 2 years worth.
Now he
A) is making about $125k
B) deployed in Iraq flying Blackhawks like crazy...loving
Was just promoted to Captain

Moral of the story,
it is there for those who are serious, work hard and compete.
Proud of that young man!

Oh, his brother went to 7 years of school studied hard, fought his way through a grueling schedule while working as well...
He now makes $150 in Florida 2 years out of school with his Doctorate in Pharmacology...is on the fast track to become a Store Manager then eventually a District Manager. His Management team loves him for his work ethic and leadership...he gets the best out of his employees and is friends with most.

The American Dream is alive and well.

There is always a Susan at those places drinking red wine, and the older guys are drinking Miller from a plastic cup.
