I have an idea about boarding penalties. How about if the player gets "boarded" and injured then its a penalty and the offender is suspended for the amount of time injured player is out.
There is no point on giving a player a boarding penalty if the player wasn't injured. Because the hit must not have been that bad to begin with. And how many times do players spin towards the boards just to get the call, they act hurt, draw the penalty and play on the next shift.
And no Im not an LA fan. - Leniwm1
1) That would never be a good solution because if someone like Crosby boards a 4th line player on an opposing team within the conference, they'd keep that player on IR as long as humanly possible to keep an opposing team's top player out.
2) So injury is the basis of a penalty? Should high-sticks that don't draw blood not be high sticks? Or slashes that don't injure a player not be slashes?

Hey Ryan, I like your blogs and after some games I come here to see your take about the game. It's kinda disappointing to see another blog about Reaves, specially since the last one had a large portion about him.
Yes he sucks, yes he cant produce or bring anything else to the team, yes the coach has to shelter his minutes because he's a liability. Speaking about it over and over again won't change anything. We traded for him and at least for now he's staying there unfortunately.
So much we could be talking about. Let the Reaves topic go.

The more I read this, the more I see a bit of home-team bias.
This is like me saying that it's Schultz's fault that he got injured because he positioned himself in a vulnerable position, and that Brown shouldn't be suspended because Schultz shouldn't have put himself in that position to begin with. - tkecanuck341
It's funny it was Brown that's that happened to. Any coincidence there? I bet if the next game against the Bruins & Marchand gets similar treatment you won't complain?

Jesse Marshall at the Athletic has a nice article on Oleksiak. Basically saying the Penguins have found another good reclamation project......like Schultz and Nisky. I love that we have a big guy who effectively uses his size. He's great at shrugging off checks and winning puck battles. It's early, but we apparently stole him.
As far as Cole goes, I think it's pretty easy to understand. Him and the coach don't necessarily like each other and he's an UFA (as the Pens are actively shopping him). It's disappointing 'cause Hunwick blows, but in light of those facts above, I understand why Cole isn't playing.
I'll be interested to see what happens when Ruhwedel gets healthy. Hunwick should sit IMO. |

Any thoughts on the benching of Sprong? We need more guys like him, not less.
Sprong contributes more to this team than Reaves...
Reaves doesnt deter anything. He simply eats roster spots and cap space. HE clearly hasn't deterred anything. I still dont understand why they went away from what worked for 2 straight seasons to return to the stone ages.... - Amanion
Ryan, is that you?
FYI. No such thing as deterrents. JR wanted a physical player that can throw punches so in the playoffs if we get there, & other teams want to punch on we have Reaves & now Oleksi. Remember the Rags game? Before the Oleksi fight Rags = good, after Rags = bad.
Also, its better having Reaves in the box rather than anyone else although that doesn't always happen. And guess what, if a poopstain doesn't want to fight he just says no. So why would a deterrent be required if they existed when a guy can just say no thanks to a fight? |

I think that in the NHL, if you spear someone in the nuts, you should get a penalty/fine/suspension. I don't care if the person getting speared is Sean Avery, it's never ok. |

You would think DeSmith getting his first career start and win while looking really solid would be a good blog discussion about the goaltending depth in the organization.
But what do I know, I'm just a snowflake |

I agree. I think any & all scumbag play should be sanctioned, & no it won't cause the NHL to melt down because players will stop doing cheap shots like that if they are sanctioned - game time sanctions none of this $ poop, they earn too much to worry about 10k.
The early slashing calls is a perfect example, although from what everyone was saying it was very inconsistant. But, you had players & coaches coming out saying that they have to stop slashing. Perfect. Now if you spear anyone & get a 2 game suspension, i can see less spearing (although how many examples are there per game?), & then that won't be a problem. Putting guys into the boards is as dangerous a play as any in my opinion with the greatest risk of injury. But it appears it's the least sanctioned cause it's 'hockey'! |

Yes it's funny how people sitting thousands of km's away never meet & have no idea of each other can actually suggest someone does something or doesn't do something. Commenting on attitudes fair enough, but saying someone physically does or doesn't do something is crazy. Unless of course you are telling someone to go (frank) themselves in a broom closet! |

The last 2 articles are an embarrassment. Talking about a 4th line player over and over again. Obviously Sully seems to like him since he's in the lineup night after night. TBH the 4th line has been playing good lately. Calling someone a snowflake when u are the biggest whiny snowflake is laughable. We all know RW doesn't like fighting or physical play it sucks having a Pittsburgh writer from Buffalo that has a Napolean complex and rather watch figure skating than hockey |

Oleksiak could pass Dumo and thus allowing Dumo to be traded. I've been a fan of his from Dallas and I knew with the right coaching, he would flourish. His penalties haven't been that bad either.

Not sure what others think, but in a 1 goal game why the (frank) would you go EN with 2:20 left on the clock? That sounds crazy! Get scored on, 1-3 then score with less than a minute left. Why wouldn't you wait till about 1:30 to go EN or even less? Bat poop crazy in my mind. Well done Trotz! |

I wouldn't mind seeing him get a look on the 3rd or 4th line. With all this Reaves bashing, I wouldn't mind seeing him take his spot in the line up (even though it's doubtful they would sit Reaves). Or let Sheary take a night off and then put ZAR in his spot |
