That too, but I mean the drop off between say Gagner and Goldobin/Boucher isn’t significant, at least not now that the playoffs aren’t really on the table - 1970vintage

Vegas? Yes most of our top 9 and top 4 would crack their roster - Pres.cup
Most of our top 9 or our top 4 D WOULD crack vegas's current top 9 or top 4 D?? I dont think so man. Remove bo, boeser, and tell me who vegas would ideally want in thwir top 9 or 4 and you would be hard pressed to find one |

We have a few guys that would play on any teams top 9 forwards, but they are either core building blocks or foundational players - 1970vintage
Yes obviously Horvat and Boeser, even though the flow isn't fast, could play for them. |

True, I don't get why they won't let Virtanen and Goldobin play, they're no worse than Gagner defensively. It's like Green is trying to save face for Benning?
If they had McCann and Ehlers or Larkin in the line-up with the kid from the second round pick they gave away for Gudbranson two years ago they'd be in a lot better shape and more entertaining with the kids I listed above almost ready.....but I digress. - LeftCoaster
Argh! Feelings.
I would like to introduce to you the new coach and GM of the canucks for the 2018/2019 season...

No....they wouldnt because they employ a speed game, our forwards dont fit their mold. - LeftCoaster
Bo, Brock, JV, Sven, Sutter, granlund, Gagner, Vanek, hank, dank, Dowd (but not Guance) are all as fast and are more skilled then Tomas Nosak.... maybe not guance.
Now the statement was how many of our roster players would be able to crack the roster of a top team this year.
Tomas Nosak plays hockey slightly better then Guance and has played all the games.
Im sure Jon Merrill is a fine hockey player as is bread hunt and Lucas sbisa... but Edler, tanev, MDZ and stetcher/gudbranson are as good or better.

My grievance is with the quantity and quality of the core. In 4 seasons as GM, JB has added two to Gillis' legacy of two.
Oh God, that's so (frank)ing bad! - bloatedmosquito
But we had nothing to go on except Bo and Tanev from Gillis and that is the problem. JV from 2014 is coming along and will be a 3rd liner and maybe a 2nd liner. NOt what you expect from a 6OA but what can you do. He also found our goalie of the future in Demko. 2015 produced BB and maybe Gaudette. 2016 and 2017 are to recent to consider anything. so JB has had 2 drafting years that should have results and he does. GMMG only drafted 1 core player in 6 years and got one as a college FA. and both of them are much better than they ever expected. |

If he proves he's an NHL talent (as in training camp) then he did earn his spot Einstein - LeftCoaster
What i mean is if he shows well this year or doesn't mean he should be given a spot next year. 3lc or Utica, in my opinion. |

The original statement i responded to was talking about cracking their roster, not their top 9 or top 4.... as far as cracking the top 4 or 9.... that's alot harder.
Edler and Tanev would sneak into most top 4s.... that's it on d
Bo, Brock, Sven, dank, hank, Vanek, possibly Sutter.
Ignore cap hit.... just talking ability to play hockey. |

Your right, but we have FA as an owner. Can't fault JB 100% for some of these things, FA demands playoff revenue every year even if we suck. Even when they tell us differently we know they are lying, as their moves show otherwise.
JV is already better than Gagner defensively. Goldobin backchecks a lot better than him as well. I would say both are better defensively than Gagner and the twins. |

i think the point is that the majority of the canucks' roster is made up of spare parts and barely hanging on nhlers (either fringers or vets).
sure any contender will have players who on an individual basis may not be as "good" as the canucks' spare part brigade but those individuals for whatever reason work in that team's system... and it's probably due to that team not being made up of a bunch of spare parts.
the team as constructed has a couple/few players they should want to keep and every other player is a spare part. build and plan around the 2-3 guys that are worth it.
every other player, who really cares long term. the team is 5 years away from contending... minimum! |

I look at it this way.
Our first line could play as most teams 2nd line, our 2nd line is a legitimate 3rd line, our 3rd line.... well that is a solid 4th line, and our 4th line would be a decent AHL top line.
Do the same on D and in net and.... yup it's ugly but we do have skilled players.... just more middle 6 and lower them most.[/img] |

i look at it more in terms of how many players a team needs to succeed. usually a well built team will have a core (usually drafted) of about 6-8 players. that core should be sprinkled with players in the 22-28 range.
amongst that core, you need at least 2 players at the super star level (you can't rely on getting a generational player in the draft).
the canucks have a bunch of question marks but there is hope as well. can brock be one of the superstars? it's looking good so far. can EP? bigger question.
if i'm management, you're looking at where the team will be in 5 years and building your best chance to win then (moving forward.)
...or you can try to compete every year blah blah blah. |

Likely true, but most bottom feeding teams can say this. It’s hard not to have at least a couple of legit top 6 players and a top 4 dman or 2 in the cap era, even Arizona and Buffalo do. |

Buffalo has a pretty legit top6, 1 good dman and no goalie. Not the same problems, but they got a lot of holes/AHL players too. I suspect they have locker room issues bigger than Kane. O'Rielly and Eichel have big fat heads.
Chayka is GMing that Arizona team a lot like how many of us would like the Canucks run IMO. They dumped a lot last TDL and offseason and acquired some nice picks and prospect and got a lot younger. In other words, he has orchestrated a full-tank team. I fully expect him to get a few picks and prospects again this TDL. A lot of young guys are in over their heads there, but they win and lose based on the kids and have gotten better (hard to get worse after going what, 0-10 to start the year?) |

Chayka did do what a lot of us wanted the Canucks to do, but he seemingly lost some patience with the Stepan trade, as outsiders we have no idea whether or not he was forced to make win now moves by ownership as well so it’s hard to say if he gets 100% of the blame. Plus he put a lot of faith into Raanta, hoping it’d work out like Talbot did for Edmonton. Who hasn’t been terrible, but inconsistent and not a workhorse reliable starter. People acting like he’s been some joke of a GM are exaggerating. Outside of the Stepan trade, his moves have been reasonable.
The Hjalmarsson trade was solid, Murphy is a bottom pairing dman and he can easily recoup the value he gave up to acquire Hjalmarsson if he trades him at the TDL. |
