I do think sometimes proper development means playing a young kid through his mistakes. Cannot bench, or cut ice time if they start to cost you. I think Flyers do that a bit too much at times with players who don't jump right in and have immediate success. - flyer_nutter
I agree how many times do you hear players say it helped them knowing the coach trusts them enough to put them on the ice for a shift right after they make a mistake. And for those of you who play both sides and will say maybe hes not mentally tough enough.. Yes every player is different. |

So serious question...what kind of stock do you put into Hextall a) saying what he said about wanting Sanheim to play and b) keeping Sanheim on the roster for as long as he did despite the clear designation as the 7th defenseman?
To me, it is obvious Hextall preferred he play and continued to develop in the NHL - YuenglingJagr
I suspect he wanted him to get back in the line up. When he didn't play Thursday he was probably leaning towards sending him down. Back to back wins on the weekend sealed it. If he really wants Sanheim in the line up he can make it happen. But the team is rolling so no need to force the issue at this point.

Do you think that Manning and Sanheim have played in the exact same set of circumstances in the NHL ? - MJL
now there is a question not worth answering.

That was kind of my point. Guys like Prov, and Hagg have done a great job at coming in and having immediate success to a varying degree.
The one's who have struggled a bit, club is a bit too hard on in my eyes. Hopefully it pays off I suppose. People will point to Konec and Ghost here for right/wrong. |

add in the all star break and LHC plays three games in the next 4 days, good time to send him down. I said last week, now is the time. I hope he lights it up and is called up ASAP

Thing is, when he is called up and eventually makes a mistake or is costing the club. The coach needs to let him play through it. |

Bill, please explain why Radko (with his heavy shot) is not on 2nd power play unit, and Manning is? |

that is a great point, next time trust has to be there, that is a huge part of confidence.

I do think there should be a balance of doing "everything to win" and giving young players ample opportunity to grow and develop. Especially on a club that is basically going to rely on said young players in the near future.
Some guys are players who can step right in and not hurt you most nights. I do think at times you have to live with a young players growing pains, and not bench time/cut the ice time immediately. - flyer_nutter
I think they've found that balance pretty damn effectively.
25 & 20 year olds on the top line
Patrick playing a bigger role each game.
24 & 21 year olds on the top pair
22 year old on the shut down pair
On top of that, Laughton and Weal are playing important roles. Sanheim will be back.

My friend Larry saw Mac doing lines with Lappy/Weise/Lehtera/Manning.
Its only a matter of time until the authorities have been made aware. |

Sanheim will be back eventually. He has wheels and great offensive instincts but he still looks like a kid out there from time to time. Also for his size he sometimes gets overwhelmed and uncomfortable making plays along the boards or taking a hit. I'd like him to get over that.

Thing is, despite certain fans wanting them to do so..The Flyers aren't rebuilding. They've restocked while remaining competitive. Exactly what Hextall said they were going to do.
In regards to Sanheim, the NHL is not a development league and letting a player make mistakes can have both positive and negative effects on their development. - Baxter27
Just want to point out, Couts didn't come into the league as an 18year old scoring 49 points in 48 games.
Players will have to learn how to play in the NHL, which is a part of development. |
