The Athletic reminds me of the time all those prominent sportswriters went to "The National" around 1990 or so. I worked at a newspaper/magazine store in those days, remember that paper well.

I actually just bought a subscription. It was 40% off and I think it cost me $35. At that price it's totally worth it, to me.

There really is some good content. A big reason I decided to do it is because I have a weird obsession with the draft and prospects and Corey Pronman writes a lot of interesting stuff on those topics, as a scout. For those personal interests alone, the $35/yr is worth it to me.

Watch the CHL top prospect game. Svechnikov was kinda lackluster. Zadina and Bocuhard were great.

In the spirit of my conversation with Jimbo, please allow me to share Pronman's evaluation of Svechnikov from the top prospects game

Andrei Svechnikov, RW, Barrie-OHL: Svechnikov was one of the few players for Team Orr that was consistently dangerous. Svechnikov stands out because he has such a unique blend of speed, skill, power and IQ. The versatility in how he attacks defenses makes him fun to watch. When he was on the ice in this game, he was the driver for his line, gaining the zone with control frequently and making a play. He made nice passes, drove hard to the net with the puck and played with pace.

and, for the hell of it, Zadina too

Filip Zadina, LW, Halifax-QMJHL: I’ve talked about Zadina so much in the last few months there’s only so much I can say. He was great yet again. He has elite skill and has the work ethic to put himself in a position to make the most of his talents. There’s no clear weakness in his game, and he can make dynamic plays. He’ll make an NHL fanbase very happy for years to come.

Zadina is REALLY good. He can do everything in the offensive zone at high level.

pretty sure I got into it with him once, we argued over his comments that Rocco Grimaldi will be better NHL player than Chris Kreider

I remember when Jess Rubenstein was killing the Rangers from drafting Chris Kreider over Jordan Caron.

Yeah it's not an exact science by any means.

For whatever it's worth (read: nothing) I hated the Reinhart and Strome picks. I have a major aversion to guys who shoot up the draft board over the course of one season and Strome was exactly that. I remember wanting Zibanejad to be the pick that year and wanting them to take Forsberg or Trouba in the Reinhart draft.

I think he could easily be the 2nd overall pick behind Dahlin this year. He had a monster WJC.

Like Evan Bouchard this year, but he was great in the prospects game yesterday. I do like the fact he's a RHS and Captain of the London Knights. He's gonna be a top pick, barring injury.

Lots of defensemen in this draft. It's not a particularly deep draft year in general, but there are a ton of defenseman that figure to go in the first round.

It's a depper draft than last year. I will say after watching Veleno, I can see why a team likes him. He can skate, he's smart in both zone and is great passer. He just refuses to shoot the puck it's odd.

He has Josh Bailey syndrome.

Noah Dobson is a guy I really like, too. Haven't had the chance to see him play but based on what I've read he's exactly what the Islanders need desperately. Doubtful he is there when they pick (with either pick), unless them or CGY fall off a cliff in the standings.
