I agree it’s important to take off the blinders and be realistic about this team. I acknowledge that the won/loss record places us at or near the bottom of the league all the time, and results matter.

I also think, if we “take the blinders off,” and deal with “realistic expectations,” that nobody should be disappointed with last night’s game. We lost by one goal to a league powerhouse, and had several chances to tie in the last minutes of the game. That’s a far better result than most would have predicted before they played.

This is not to accept a losing mentality. It just recognizes four prongs of a truth that lead to a difficult season: 1) this team has in place many of the pieces that are necessary for a string successful, winning, playoff contending seasons; 2) this team is missing several very important pieces necessary for that success; 3) it takes a long time to find and acquire those missing pieces; and 4) the team still plays games during that process.

While they play, I’m gonna focus on where they are exceeding expectations (“root now”) rather than any other approach (we suck; Bogo is poop; trade everyone; everyone we traded is great, etc.).

Have a nice day, drink responsibly, don’t drive if you slip into a few too many.

Ooh, ahh.

- Der Kaiser

Yeah not disappointed by the result, they hung in there and Lehner played well. Kinda wish Ristolainens shot at the end woulda gone in but oh well

It gets overlooked in the bogo sucks posts but I focus the exceeded expectations too. I mean before tonight Reinhart looked like a completely different player, I hope he continues that

I can't really agree with number 1) though. A team that has many of the pieces in place necessary to be a playoff contender but is still missing several pieces may fall short of a playoff spot but it doesnt fall 30th place short.

I predicted 5-0 Blues, so sure(?) I guess better than expected.

I think the first premise of your argument is debatable. The word many should be deleted for the statement to be more accurate.

Yes, there are pieces, however several those pieces cost way too much to sustain long term success...Pommenville, Okposo, ROR, Bogo, etc. thankfully, some of those and other large contracts go away in relatively short/reasonable time (Pommenville, Moulson, Gorges)...while others linger on ROR, Okposo, Bogo. Unfortunately, as new talented players join the team (Mitts, Guhle, Asplund, etc) with cost controlled contract they will eventually push these costly players down the lineup, making a very cost-heavy 3rd line. It is for this reason, I would be supportive of moving on from ROR and Okposo...starting next off-season (summer of 2019) since it is highly likely their current pay/production does not lend itself to a trade...hopefully, their play improves consistently and combined with shorter term remaining will enable interested GM’s to squeeze them into their roster.

Further, ineffective players (lacking proper skill and/or speed) who have proven they can’t play in this system must be jettisoned...Girgensons, Larson, Nolan and more.

The other points in your post are accurate.

We are not good, we have miles and miles to go, it will take a lot more time than this fan-based was sold on.

Interesting scenario

Might be a good hockey trade.
Arizona adds a bit more skill
Buffalo adds more toughness

Wish homie was around to discuss

Beaulieu and Girgs for Domi

We want to keep Sam

Kane, Bogo, Ror, Okposo should be on the list to move.....

Although Sam has played well for the past 10 games, im worried that he just doesnt have the heart to self motivate and bring it every night

Pretty sure bull -u and girgs gets you an inflated contract back not a talent

According to Larry Brooks, Arizona doesn’t see much talent there

Reinhart already has a 20 goal season under his belt and multiple 40+ point seasons

You want to lose the trade?

Sam 219 gp 111 Points

Max 192 gp 112 Points

Plus max adds some needed toughness.

Not sure who Larry is , seams pretty fair.

I like Domi but he had 9 goals last year and 3 this year. Wouldn’t call that a beast.

My belief - especially in light of the number of games we lose by on goal or one goal and an empty netter - is that we are close. I would also say the stinkers and inconsistency are a result of 8 or so good players trying over and over and over to do the work of 10 good players. They get tired and fall apart, and from time to time they’re just outclassed.

I believe you add 2 more good players, spread around the hard work it takes to win a little more evenly, and many of the one goal losses go away and the stinkers a fewer and far between.

That’s my story and that’s where I’m staying.

The nhl is full of teams that finish in the bottom then become playoff teams the following year. No reason to thiink the sabres can't.

Domi is lacking a #1 center .
Eichel would help those putrid goal totals

I didn’t see that, yeah that does look fair.

I would move Ror before I moved Reinhart.

That's fair and it certainly makes sense I just dont think the scale is quite 8-10 (8 trying to do the work of 10 i mean)

IMO, the one goal losses come from Housley adopting Bylsma's conservative strategy, likely trying to compensate for the fact that there simply isn't enough skill and speed to execute the gameplan he wants.

It be Danny 2.0 yes the goal totals are big concern but I look at the roster make up and the only player I see there is Keller

I think Bringing him to a place That is a Hockeytown would do him some good ( yes we suck but he will get a chance to play with a franchise player )

Good point, although the sabres have been losing, this is a whole different hockey feel then Arizona.

Imagine the Toronto games

I think trading for a guy like domi, is a great move.

Plenty of upside , might need a change of venue to revive his career.

Agreed. Housley has shown he can adapt to a style that more closely matches the existing talent and skill set of the majority of players. Defensively focused, chip and chase, dump and run, slow, trap, etc.

Now the question becomes Is this the system you want to see the Sabres play?

No thank you.

If that is for you, then they are closer to making that familiar mad dash to 8th.
But is that the objective?

I’d rather they right this ship and overhaul the roster to match the desired up-tempo, fast, 5 man attacking unit they identifies last off season. That will take significantly more time to accomplish...but I’m up for it if I see the transformation happening.
Go down the path of trying to become the Tampa Bay Lightning.
