i'm sure they could find someone to back up Johnson while keeping Ullmark in Rochester...that said, Ullmark has played a lot of regular games for the amerks and the big thing for him would be getting ahl playoff experience...he could finish the season in Buffalo getting a handful of starts then go to Rochester near the end of the season to gear up for the playoffs - Michael Pachla

If we traded him away to a playoff team, I'd imagine we'd just take back their backup or someone who can play a few games. Most likely, that would be necessary anyways for cap reasons. - RhinoFan
That would be ideal, but if we're trading with a team who's starter is injured, they probably want to keep their backup and send whoever is the 3rd stringer they have back down to the minors.
LTIR solves the cap problem in that case, as does the Sabred covering some of Lehners.

I'm going to have to disagree here and say we need to hang on to Lehner. His stats have actually progressively gotten worse sine he's been here, so there's almost zero chance he gets a significant raise. He's still an RFA and throwing him another 1 or 2 year deal at 4 million seems about right. I also think he wants to stay here and see this thing through at least another season.
You throw Ullmark to the wolves next season and he'll be Biron all over again. Split them even next season and go from there. |

he's really grown since coming to buffalo and has become a mature voice in the locker room...
yet, I still have reservations about his game, I don't think that he'll go for a short-term contract and am of the opinion that it's time for Ullmark to get his shot... |

Being an RFA he doesn’t have much choice on his term. |

I don't see the reasoning behind trading Lehner. He is a good goalie and he is cheap. There are 10 names we need to move before we move Lehner and if we don't get back at least what we gave for him it's a freakin waste. This trade deadline is shaping up to be an abomination. We will blow it, I can just feel it coming. |

Haven't heard much in the last couple days besides same teams with interest. Pens, Kings, Sharks, AVS there's couple more floating around as well. I was told he might make a move within the week or so but hard to say, I don't think the other guys are having any effect on Botterill at all. He will wait and get the best deal he can regardless. - SABRES 89
I would hope he would make a move or so coming up, the trade deadline will be here. |

I just don't think he's in buffalo's plans next season...if they could get a 2nd or a mid-level prospect, take your lumps and move on |

I don't think he has much choice in terms of his contract, honestly.
And like I said, we have to be VERY careful throwing Ullmark to the wolves. We're terrible on defense, and banking on him as the starter while trying to fill the backup role next season could end up being a disaster.
You said yourself, Lehner is a great voice in the locker room, so I can't see how keeping him on another 1-year deal is a bad thing. He's worth more than a throwaway pick or roster player.
And again, his stats have progressively gotten worse in his time here. he's not in any kind of position to demand anything. He has a good season next year, then he's more valuable either way, will be hitting his UFA year and both he and the team would benefit from a strong season. |

if you don't trade him, you either pay him 4 mil or more for next season or let him walk for nothing
they will not get a mid first back for him no matter how well he plays in the future because
he is not that good |

Prob the same value you could get for him next year too, could always sign him for 1 or 2 more years and see if Ullmark has it.
I wouldn’t be opposed to trading him now if the offer was better then a mid round 2nd. Doubt it though. |

as for his stats, the first year here he was injured and it's a smaller sample size which includes inconsistent play featuring extremities both good and bad...last year and this year are more appropriate...
secondly, I got the impression last off-season that he wasn't thrilled with a one-year deal saying something to the effect that he'd proven his worth...but being a good soldier, he didn't complain and signed the deal...
as for Ullmark, he got thrown to the wolves in 2015-16 when Lehner was injured, was the amerks mvp while facing the most shots in the league last season...this year he's progressed even more in the ahl...I believe (though don't know for sure) that he's got a good handle on the mental part of the game |

team will never turn that trade into a draw, it's a lost trade
the bigger question is do you want lehner for another 2 or 3 years, or part ways today with a team
he is who he is, and pretty bad at controlling rebounds

Well said
Lehner is “ok”
Not as bad as the haters would make u think, and not as good as his supporters say
The reason to trade him now,
is that we can probably get a 2nd for him
It’s not like we can’t brong in another goalie to split time with Ullmark next year |

He doesn't have to be thrilled with anything; He's an RFA and his stats have been bad.
I like him and I hope the last several games since the Stars fiasco are a step in the right direction, not a vision of the future, but a trend forward.
Goalies don't hit their prime until their late-20's. I want to see this through and whether he and his agent like it or not, they have no leverage. |
