Yeah, I typically don't follow the prospects enough to know more than the names of the top guys and generally try to remember that some people are making their living at following this kids and rating them.
But, I have on occasion looked at the finished draft and been a little upset the NYR didn't draft more Canadians. I get that I cheer for an American team, and in the biggest market. But, come on!! There's a reason that the Conn Smythe was won by a Canadian the first 29 times it was awarded!! A streak ended by Brian Leetch, btw.

Pure odds... Tehy made up 78-80% of the league until about 1990

Wow! Inadvertently you may have just made Gorton look like the right guy for the job. Two first-round centers in his first Rangers draft! He's changing the organizations long held philosophies!
- oyaron

Yeah. I got no issue with Gorts for now. He just started his tenure lets see how he does. Not sure what some people expected 1 year into getting the reins.

Thank you lol. It’s amazing how quick people lose faith in certain people. Two things Girtan did was get something meaningful for Stepan and is about to get a first rd pick for a fairly insignificant UFA signing, at the time, in Grabner. Faith and patience aren’t in CERTAIN people’s dictionary

So, what you're saying is that the league is half Canadian?

Not only that, but it seems like his negotiating skills are pretty good. Say what you want about Shattenkirk, but his contract came in much lower than what the market would have paid. I also have liked the fact that he's sticking to his guns on getting younger. It's clear he has a plan and not just winging it year by year.

Gorton is alright in my book. He just needs to figure out this coaching issue.

Yeah, look what the guy was dealt. Lets give him 5 years and see whats up.

Instant gratification culture.

Shatty is an incomplete for me. Wasn’t in love with getting him but it was definitely cheap and almost a no brainer. You saw glimpses of what he can do early in the season. The PP had a few weeks of buzzsaw potential. He sucks defensively but I always say, there are no secrets with certain guys and you get what you get and they got a very good offensive dman and more specifically a PP point man. Never was never will be an elite defensive dman

I have no idea. Like Beano said. Stepan trade was good, Shatty signed below market value. Picked 2 centers in the 1st round.

Brendan Smith, trading two 2nd rounders for him and now this signing is probably his worst, but, like Jan says in this blog, that's a surprise to everyone

I loved Brassard as a Ranger, but the trade for Zibby was kind of highway robbery. I don't see many general managers trading a younger emerging player for a much older comparable player that plays the same position.

Brendan Smith

Good:

Too early to say, but last year's first round picks are looking good.

Let's fill this in.

Was the Hagelin trade his or Sathers'?

Playing his 700th season in the OHL. Book is still out as far as I am concerned, but getting a player who was granted exceptional status in the 3rd round that his kind of measurable was worth the chance, even if he doesn't turn into anything. It was a good pick.
