He’s 10 steps over that group

But they just plain suck

Do you agree that their is a buffatax. ?

We need to pay players more to come here.

Sabres bought out some years of being a ufa with his long contract.

Ror at 6 million plus 25% buffatax equals 7.5

The price of doing business in this losing atmosphere.

Its funny but kind of true. We end up getting the guys that want to come here for the wrong reasons (money).

Serious question-Have we ever signed a free agent that played beyond expectations or actually helped us win ?

I don't see evidence of said 'buffatax'. It's certainly easy to point a finger at it. But recently, Okposo and ROR signed for market price. Risto signed for a pretty fair deal after the success he had last season. The guy really needs to play less minutes with a different type of partner, but for a guy who puts up 40-50 a season and play top 4, it's a pretty reasonable contract.

I know you hear poop about Buffalo often enough. And you don't hear the stories very often that say player x snubbed the Sabres/Bills because they didn't want to play there because of their perception of the city. Despite the fact that almost everyone that plays here likes it here.

I guess the only thing you can prove is the guys who signed here, did they sign here above current market value? I would say no.

Not really. In the cap era, it's sort of a league-wide phenomenon.

Pitt built from within for the most part + trades
Chi signed Hossa which helped, but he should be hindering their cap now, but the league is a joke.
LA acquired their high-end talent through trades and drafting
Boston - big exception: Chara

The league is littered with bad UFA signings

other Richards
Kovalchuk
Parise (not yet, but just wait)

It mostly has to come from within and good trades

The cap era is littered with failed UFA signings for all teams

Dixon Ward and Teppo were awesome.

Ehrhoff wasn't bad for a time.

Poyer and hyde

But seriously: your right, guys chasing the payday vs. Winning .
We have deep pockets and a Losing identity.

That's why hitting on draft is so important

Yea free agent signing results have been pretty brutal overall. I still think the Ehrhoff signing wasn't that bad. He did help us he just didnt want any part of the rebuild.

Smart trades like plucking Danny Briere out of Phoenix and Drury are what landed us success along with developing prospects

Also I found this article from 2003 about the Drury trade and Regier rebuilding the sabres. Pretty eerie stuff haha

So you want long term problems for short term problems? You know their cap/yr is about equal right.

I proposed this before, and i think it makes sense on some level

Phaneuf and Hoffman

for Bogo, Kane and Bailey

Sens get cap relief from Phaneuf, they can trade Kane to recoup the picks they lost from Duchene, and they get a piece in Bailey to help a rebuild. Sabres maybe add another pick to sweeten

Why choose buffalo?

Unless it's family related, parents/grandparents
It's not for the weather, beaches or year round golf courses.

Winning? Nope
Original 6?
Night life

I find it hard to believe okposo chose buffalo, unless it was the highest offer.

I'm a proud buffalalonian: The buffatax is real

You're taking 3 out of however many variables, tilting the argument greatly against simply the city.

A lot of players choose a franchise for their long term goals. Some choose to play with elite players. Some choose a market size. Some choose an American or Canadian team specifically. Some come because their friends/family are here/close. Some come simply for opportunity.

Not every player is the perception of Evander Kane.

That (frank)ing guy.

I was in NYC when the Road Crew went there in 2011, right after we traded for Boyes. Darcy was there and he was so god damn excited about it. Rob Ray was incredibly blunt with his "meh"

My friends mom used to give his kids ice skating lessons. He used to call their house leave these really strange voicemails that no one could understand. I think they still have them saved. Pretty hilarious

Yes, Except Phaneuf is an actual 2nd pairing D-man. Ryan is an actual 2nd line winger.

He was ok.

He actually reminds me a lot of Sam Reinhart.

So meh, but partially under appreciated. Made smart plays and scored around the net. But wasn’t a great skater or puck handler
