Thank you

Too bad the sabres didn't consider this?
He might be moved, would you rather have him then gorges?

- Boss34

Why would you think the Sabres haven't considered this? I think it's just a matter of Nelson's play surprising anyone who's watch him play the last two years. Even if they foresaw this, what would they have done differently?

If it's game 7, and I have to put in my 8th D, I'd want Gorges. I'd be less comfortable with Nelson, after not playing for an extended period.

BS - as how could the Soviets "make" the US win in the preliminary round? They were 30 seconds away from losing to Sweden in game #1, which would have effectively ended their gold medal hopes. How did Russia convince Sweden to give up the tying goal with 30 seconds left...

- turbo044

The US still would have advanced to the second round - losing to Sweden still gives them 8 points - 2nd place.

...and then for the Czechs to play horribly in game 2.

- turbo044

Well, this one's quite easy: the KGB would have told the Czech players to lose or else.

The US was losing 2-1 to Finland going into the 3rd period in the game after the Russia game. If the US doesn't score 3 unanswered goals in the 3rd, they don't win the gold.

- turbo044

This is the tough one. Although a case can be made that at the time, the Soviet Union exerted tremendous pressure over Finland. But if you are forcing me to defend the conspiracy theory, I'd simply say that the US team flat-out beat Finland. I'll also point out that the US only needed 2 unanswered goals, and I can't recall what the actual tie-breaker formula was, but maybe USA only needed a tie against Finland, since they had beaten the USSR head-to-head?

So.....next conspiracy theory?

On vacation so don’t get much wifi but I feel it’s going to be a very disappointing deadline. I believe someone posted (Homie I believe) that we could have had to first rounders for Kane earlier this season. I said Botts should be fired for not doing that deal and a majority of posters grilled me saying that we don’t need late firsts. How do we feel about that now lol ?

Soooooooo...

There is a theory out there that the Soviets threw the 1980 Olympics.

Long story short:
President Carter is threatening to boycott the 1980 Moscow Summer Games. USSR simply can't afford it - they've spent too much money, and they need the propaganda of beating western countries.

So they devise a devilish plan: throw a marquee event in the 1980 Lake Placid games (4 months earlier) in the hopes that the US would be swept up in Olympic fever and want to go to Moscow.

What makes this conspiracy theory so much fun is that the USSR played (more accurately, coached) the wildest, wackiest game of hockey ever for the game against the US.

I've had fun with this over the years (including convincing one of the world's most prolific hockey book editors to include a tiny reference to it in a best-selling (for hockey!) book.

Of course, I've never actually believed it.

But here's the fun bit: my brother is a teacher, and Tretiak was coming to the school to give a little talk. So I insisted that my brother ask him about it (this was a few years ago, but less than a decade).

So Tretiak gives his little talk on whatever, and then they open it up to questions. The kids have no franking clue who this guy is, so there is an awkward silence.

So my brother asks, "Mr. Tretiak, it's never been fully explained why you were pulled from the Miracle on Ice game. What happened?"

According to my brother, Tretiak laughed under his breath, then blurted out, "USA Hockey should build a statue of me."

He then went on to echo the same sort of bullcrap that you would expect - but my brother says he never really listened to anything after that first sentence.

Not saying any of this as false, but I've heard that Tretiak won't talk about the game or the 1980 Olympics at all. And at events, if anyone brings it up he leaves. Heard this from a few people in the know, but with anything there may be a level of translation error or over exaggeration.

In Black Mass, the FBI agent from Southy never gave up anyone, even after his arrest.

The Departed's Frank Costello was an FBI informant with an inside man in the "staties". Not sure on the relevance there.

If we're going the movie routes, Jimmy Conway(the Irishman in Goodfellas) never snitched, and told Henry to "keep your mouth shut, and never rat out your friends."

I don't know why, but this is one of my favorite scenes in the movie.

And apparently they made a 30 for 30 which gets the Soviet players' side of the story:

And this one:

http://articles.chicagotr...iet-coach-viktor-tikhonov

Tretiak talks without anger about those Olympics. He doesn't try to avoid the matter. He couldn't even if he did.

He wasn't bothered when the 1980 team lit the Olympic cauldron in Salt Lake City--"For me, no big surprise because Team USA 1980 is a big hero. They beat us."--and there would be no bad memories of 1980 when his Russian team faced off against the United States on Saturday night.

"Different game," he said. "More professionals. All teams have professionals. Everybody knows who is who. No surprise."

Tretiak gives that 1980 U.S. team its due. It might be a miracle to everyone else, but it was solid hockey to Tretiak.

"Team USA played very well," Tretiak said.

"They beat the Swedes, Czechs, us, Finland. Their goalie played very well. We had 45 shots, they had 18 [in the Miracle game]. Plus, luck."

Bad luck for Tretiak, who seems to endure these questions every Olympics and every time Brooks gets a new job. It cannot be easy, but he handles it with a smile.

Still, what must it be like, you wonder, to be considered one of the greatest goalies ever and constantly to be asked about one particular game--a game he never finished?

"That is hockey life," Tretiak said.

Pretty sure Netflix bought the rights to Martin Scorsese's next film, The Irishman.

It's based off the book "I Heard You Paint Houses" by Charles Brandt. It's about Frank 'the Irishman' Sheeran. Used to do hits for the mob. Also supposedly the guy who killed Hoffa, his close friend.

I read it a while ago... at the time he was the only guy on the FBI's most wanted list that wasn't Italian/Sicilian.

Kill the Irishman was a good flick. It’s about Danny Greene out of Cleveland during the 60’s and 70’s

NHL GM has been shut down by owner after another bad trade.

A National Hockey League general manager has reportedly just been handcuffed by his owner and will not be making any more significant trades for his current organization according to a former NHL player.

During a segment on 91,9 Sports radio in Montreal, former Montreal Canadiens enforcer Georges Laraque revealed that a very reliable source has informed him that Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin has been effectively shut down by owner Geoff Molson, seemingly indicating that the owner has finally lost confidence in his controversial GM.

According to Laraque his source is an NHL player agent with knowledge of the situation, and Laraque even hinted at the fact that his information may have come directly from an agent with multiple Montreal Canadiens' players under contract. Again a sign that those within the organization are quickly losing face in the leadership of Bergevin, and perhaps for good reasons.

Perhaps even more interesting from Laraque is the fact that he now says that the Canadiens will not be trading captain Max Pacioretty due to the fact that ownership simply does not have the confidence that his general manager will be able to get a quality deal if he does indeed move the star winger in a deal.

The news is very surprising indeed given the fact that it seemed readily apparent that Pacioretty would in fact be traded prior to the NHL trade deadline, and there were even reports that people from within Pacioretty's camp fully expected the trade to happen in the days leading up to the deadline.

With this news coming down today one has to wonder if it's simply a mere coincidence that this news has started to leak after the latest trade from Bergevin has once again resulted in major backlash against the organization. Both vitriolic and angry messages have been pouring in from the Canadiens fan base this morning despite the fact that the Canadiens only made a relatively minor trade deal.

For those who missed it, Bergevin traded 26-year-old defensive prospect Jakub Jerabek to the Washington Capitals in exchnage for just a fifth round draft pick, not much of a return at all. The issue for fans doesn't seem to be so much the fact that the Canadiens got very little in return on the deal, but rather that some other players weren't traded ahead of Jerabek who had shown some positive signs in limited play with the Canadiens.

Many feel that David Schlemko, another player that Bergevin acquired via a trade with the Las Vegas Golden Knights, should have been the first man up on the chopping block, and some view the decision not to move him instead as Bergevin refusing to acknowledge his previously erroneous trades.

In fact the trade of Jakub Jerabek would likely have made barely a ripple were it not for the number of mistakes already being attributed to the incompetence of the Canadiens front office, but it seems that patience from one of the most rabid fan bases in the entire league has finally run it's course.

Lastly we will leave you with some of the reactions from the Montreal media surrounding this most recent deal from the Habs.
