If I was putting together a team today, and I could pick Karlsson or Sergachev, taking into consideration health, age, contract status, career momentum, current production, I'm taking Sergachev. I know people are going to call me a troll but if you take out your feelings about Karlsson and just look at the facts, you'd be crazy to trade Sergachev for Karlsson. Karlsson will be 29 when his new contract kicks in and there's no guarantee that he's ever going to regain his form. Sergachev is young with years of cost certainty ahead (that's huge for Tampa) and there's not even a huge production gap between the two. - Jeffmt

i think trading for karlsson makes you guys huge cup favorites for 2 years. stevie y might even be able to sign him to a team friendly deal long-term.
but it's all about the now for you guys imo. even if that means giving up sergachev or point.
karlsson & pageau for johnson, sergachev, howden, 1st and 2nd could be what it takes to get him. - Tumbleweed
You leave Pageau out of this!! |

if you're building a team to win now, or for the next 3-4 years (which is what tampa is built to do)....taking everything you said into consideration......then anyone who doesn't take karlsson is an idiot.
if you're a rebuilding team, who looks like they're 3-4 years away from contending....then i agree you take sergachev
right now, karlsson is light years better than sergachev. karlsson has 10 more points, in less games playing on a VASTLY inferior team. how many points do you think karlsson would have right now on tampa......i bet he'd be close to leading the league. you say you have to consider all factors, well when you consider all factors there is a MASSIVE production gap between the two. right now, sergachev is not a top pairing dman........right now, karlsson is one of if not THE best dmen in the league - sensarmy_11
Tampa don't need Karlsson to win right now, they have a very good chance without him. So if you trade for him it costs you Sergachev, possibly Point (according to some) and a few good prospects and draft picks. Then you either watch him walk for nothing, or give him a giant contract that probably ends up costing you one of Kucherov or Vasilevskiy. So now we're down Sergachev, Point, Kucherov/Vasilevskiy, picks and prospects for a guy with a big contract that's going to be an albatross on the last few years and there's no guarantee the trade won you a cup. Thanks, but I'll hold onto Sergachev.
And do you honestly think that Karlsson is still the best defenseman in the league? Are you expecting him to be a Norris finalist? |

vegas might have the cap room to take on ryan, but they aren't close to having the required young assets it would take to get karlsson out of ottawa. i'd say vegas is one of the least likely teams to get karlsson - sensarmy_11

and keeping sergachev does guarantee a cup?
bolts are in win now mode. their 1st priority should be winning a cup this year. (frank) what happens 5 years from now. stamkos/hedman/kucherov are in their prime now.
karlsson gives them a way better chance than sergachev. hedman/karlsson could walk their way to a cup the way pronger/niedermeyer did.
and you need to check out the bolts cap situation. they could easily sign karlsson long-term. especially if they move johnson back in the deal. |

I think this whole situation is a positive for Ottawa and a negative for PD
If he's traded Ottawa is set for the next ten years with young players who are only going to get better, But PD will always be known as the guy who traded Karlsson and I don't think fans will ever forgive him for that. Especially if he doesn't get an equally impressive star player back.
If he's signed, Ottawa gets 8 more years of Karlsson, but PD is known as the guy who paid way to much for Karlsson.
It's a win - win and a lose - lose |

I have kind of a plan that I think they should do and I've gone one at length about that on here so I wont do that again on this thread. But to me, PD is an amazing scout and not a good GM. I liked BM as a coach not a GM but the one thing I will give him credit for was getting players to give home town discounts and want to play here.
This is a win for Ottawa but I think the writing is on the wall for PD |

Pricing himself too high.
Not seeing a path to winning a Cup in Ottawa.
blah blah blah
There is one single reason any of this is happening. Karlsson will not re-sign with Ottawa as long as Melnyk is owner.
This was decided this past summer when Melynk ran Alfredsson out of the organization for a second time by giving him a low-ball offer to remain as an Advisor. It was further cemented when Melnyk gave Turris a low-ball 'take it or leave' offer to extend in Ottawa which resulted in his departure.
The Senators have gone through two Presidents, three CFOs, and numerous marketing executives in the last few years because none could work with Melynk. He is toxic.
So bloggers and media can dance around why Karlsson is heading out of town all they like. But there is only one reason and that is the pathetic Senators' ownership that is Eugene Melynk. - maaddmike
This is the first I hear of Alfie being run out of town..I think bringing Alfredsson on board was a way to make amends for the hometown discount he took for several years. Essentially, I think he wouldn't have signed the one-day contract to retire a Senator if he didn't get some sort of compensation in return. To make it work, they guaranteed him a cushy "job" and paid him like they should have. |

i think an important thing to consider there also is the fact that tampa (and i guess florida) can re-sign pretty much anyone for less money than any other team. it's the stamkos thing all over again. a 12 mil deal in most markets would equate to the same take home salary as like 9.5-10 mil in florida.........plus you live in (frank)ing florida.
tampa has the incentive to trade for him because they're in a win now mode, but they can also easily re-sign him long term, for probably less than any other team. |

Most states have an income tax of around 6% or less so there's a margin there but it's not as big as most people think. Dallas, Vegas, and Nashville also offer a player zero income tax. For the rest of the league, the average is probably around 5%. Hypothetically, lets say that an American team offered Karlsson $12M annually. 5% of that is only $600k so a $9.5-10M offer from Tampa wouldn't be competitive at all. If you're talking about one of the California or Canadian teams, it's a different story, but I think people make the tax rate a bigger factor than it actually is. |

There is some light at the end of the tunnel if PD can move him for a return that will benefit us long term. But as long as Melnyk is around his will just keep happening every few years. I hope he's gone before Chabot is due to hit the market. |

I have to say I don't like the idea of trading Karlsson, I want to sign him long term. But I will say I've lost a lot of respect for Karlsson over these last few months.
I've never thought he was a good leader, I understand he is the best D in the NHL etc, but that doesn't make you a good leader.
But going public saying you want to get paid, and hinting that he could go somewhere else in interviews and now the video tonight of him before the game being all buddy buddy with the Lightning trainers and people. That's just disrespectful to Ottawa fans who are legitimately stressed out at the thought of him leaving.
I'd hate to see him pull an Alfie and give up on the team, but if he does as far as I'm concerned, he's public enemy in Ottawa. |

I thought he was an amazing leader last year in the playoffs, or maybe it was Stone all along. I agree with everything else you said though, I think it's time for us to move on.
Edit .. I don't agree with the Alfie comment, he took hometown discounts for us and always played his heart out. Him going to Detroit was on Melnyk. |

I disagree, Alfie's contract was front end loaded, he got paid a lot of money, he was just mad that he didn't make a lot in his last year of that contract. He also gave up on us in the playoffs "do you think you can come back?" Aflie's response was "Probably not".
Then BM clearly said EM told him here is a blank cheque go get Alfie signed, there was three conversations and BM was waiting for Alfie to call him back and next thing we hear is that he's on the Wings.
Then he left again from management.
The guy is a quitter. I see a lot of that bad attitude in Karlsson. If you watch the interviews after we lost in the playoffs last year, everyone else is sad, mad, upset. Karlsson was happy as can be.
Don't get me wrong, I 100% want the Sens to resign him, but doing all these little things like going to see the Lightning on the way in, hinting about leaving in the media and all that is complete BS and he shouldn't be doing it. Even if he is planning on leaving, keep it behind closed doors until the deal is done. |

I think Stone is up there, Duchene could be as well.
I actually really liked Dion's leadership, same with Ryan.
There isn't a clear leader but a few candidates. Plus we don't know when is said behind closed doors, there could be a very clearly leader we don't know about. |

True, maybe just have assistants until someone steps up and takes the reigns. My money is on stone though. Huge heart, consistent, and hates to lose. |

Hey Sens fans in Ottawa, broke owner Eugene Meldyk is moving to town as the new CEO of the team.
You can play a role in helping get the team back to respectability - and able to afford an NHL roster.
If you see Meldyk at one of the off-ramps with a cup held out please throw a loonie his way. Maybe if we all work together we can help this poor charity case be able to actually afford to own an NHL team.
We all need to play our part to support the team!

I heard Alfredsson was paid $100,000 last year as an Advisor. This summer Melnyk told him he was cutting that to $50,000. Alfredsson was so insulted he quit on the spot. He let the franchise save face by publicly saying he 'wanted to spend more time with family'.
Let me know any other owner that would make an insulting offer like that to the team's all time franchise player.
That was all Karlsson needed to hear to know he would not be extending his career in Ottawa with such a pathetic owner in place. |
