Which is totally valid, but it's certainly not unique to the Sabres. Leafs NEVER DO ANYTHING RIGHT CUZ EFF THE LEAFS!!.. Oilers, Sabres, etc, not so much...

Player x stinks and player x doesnt move the needle are two very different things, at least to me.

Girgensons stinks

Reinhart doesn't move the needle

- Sabresfan-365

I'll use these two players as an example.

Neither stink, because both can produce in prominent roles.

You know who stinks? Larsson. He doesn't succeed at the roles he's supposed to be good at, and can't elevate anyone's play (worsens it) and his own in prominent roles. That's a player who stinks.

Is "moving the needle" described as a complimentary player? What is a complimentary player?

Is "moving the needle" simply players who makes others better (Jack) or make others worse (Johan)?

im trying to figure out where the disconnect is.

We spent tons of assets and dollars to bring in game changers/needle movers and they haven't done that and it's exactly why this team isn't good (not the only reason but it'd be at or near the top of the list)

I don't believe anyone is saying these guys suck, thats people taking it to the extreme. I still believe ROR, Risto and Reinhart are good complimentary players, but you can't load up on complimentary guys and then say okay now lets go after the core guys. That ass backwards building is how you get miracle runs to 9th place.

moving the needle is someone who can make a significant difference/impact. So your second definition is probably most accurate, eichel moves it one way, larsson the other.

Complimentary guys feed off of this. When they're on with larssons of the world, they're game falls to poop ( see reinhart at centre with griffith and girgs) and when they're on with eichel they look like they deserve a huge contract extension (see that time when people thought it was a good idea to give jamie (frank)ing mcginn 4.5 million dollars)

I think that it was partly the amount of assets that it took to land our "young vets" but also a failure of GMTM to see the direction that the league was moving in.

I'm not saying that it was very clear at the time the league was shifting younger and faster but it seems like if the style of play stayed exactly the same, RoR and Reinhart probably would be much more effective.

I think the biggest issue with the roster is that it contains a lot of bigger, slower players. Would have been great in 2012 but now that teams are so young and fast we are largely left in the dust.

I think a lot of this was masked by Bylsma's defense first system. Now that we are trying to open the play up under Housley we have seriously exposed some warts on this roster.

preach, i said this a while back. He tried to build his team to be the LA Kings, only thing is that model became obsolete. The funny thing is, he drafted one of the guys responsible for that shift, so how he didnt see it coming is.....odd.

I thought it was fairly obvious and Im not the only one. Plenty of media folks and even people here

EDIT: Do i like the heart that the team has shown these last few games? Yes...but i've seen it all before. Call me when we actually put a decent 1/2 of a season together when it matters.

Isn't this the best of both worlds.

Getting a top pick

That's a good point/observation. This board could always use any optimism we can muster.

The Boston Herald's Jeff Howe reports impending free agent LT Nate Solder plans to continue his career.

There were rumors Solder was considering retirement, but it would have been surprising to see him walk away. He is only 30 (in April) and is set to be the best tackle available in a weak market. Howe also reports Solder has yet to open contract negotiations with the Patriots.

Could be a nice pick up

Would be great if he signed for backup money. Between Glenn and Dawkins, we have that area covered reasonably well. Even if we trade Glenn.

This is what I was getting at last night about being against "tanking". Hate to bring it up again, but culture is real and needs to be improved upon. Winning helps.
